And here's the corresponding (g)unzipped file

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

There are a few bmp to txt converters out there, some GPL, but only a few I've found can convert colors to text accurately. Problem is that I can't get them to convert to the correct letters so the replace function has to be used.

The strange part is nobody so far has come up with a simple Civ2 - FC mapconverter. Actually, we shouldn't even need to be thinking about bmp to txt conversion. The map format in Freeciv isn't that hard.

Of course not that "hard", as long as you concentrate on the maps itself. Converting cities, cities and the assorted civ settings correctly would be a tad more difficult. At least by hand, that is...

Well one reason for creating the shunt is that editing a bmp is a lot more lucrative than just a simple conversion. I've used a bunch of bitmaps to create new maps, stretch and shrink maps, etc... Also, there's already a utility that converts the terrain of civ2 maps to bmps, making the bridge just that much closer.

Though a complete converter would be great. Unfortunately, as you said, a complete converter would be troublesome.

Well, at least simple map editing shouldn't pose any problems.

Harry, I know you're already up to date how the format works but for the other posters interested here's a simple example of one minute of tinkering.

Hmmm, maybe if we ask nicely Mercator could make a small update for his mapeditor?

I actually just talked to Merc about that. He is currently very busy with real life and doesn't know how much programming he could do in the mean time. He said he might take stab at it if he finds the time.

Anyone want to create new graphics for the Freeciv Developers Version?

In my mind the citizens could do with an entire overhaul (make the citizen graphics bigger as well?). There's also a mention of two new specialist. Does the farmer increase food production and the worker shields?

From left to right farmer (male/female), scientist (m/f), worker (m/f), taxman (m/f), entertainer (right now the happy face graphic).

I am working on something that involves making specialists able to feel happy and unhappy, just like everyone else, as well as two new specialists, the farmer and the worker. I need some graphics for this, and started modifying the small.png file. However, since I do not have any graphical talent whatsoever, it looks horrible. Can someone please jump in and make it look better?

Yes, and the built-in editor in the dev branch is stable enough to use, though it's not full-featured yet.

I'll try to convince cproc (Christian P) to make a Windows build of it. He is the only active community member I know can make Windows packages.

(...) Hima, have you heard anything recently from evyscr? He said he was working on a Civ2 ->FC mapconverter. I've lost contact with him for awhile. If we had that converter we could simply convert Civ2 maps to the Freeciv iso format.
Yes, he has released an alpha version. I tried it out on my Mac and I could easily and sucessfully convert a random map I got from the SL library (Spartacus scenario's map of Italy). Source and an (untested) .exe for Windows on his webspace .

Hima, excellent news! I've just tried it with a few maps and it seems to work. Starting locations, rivers everything!

For some reason gigamaps (32000 squares, not available with the standard civ2) don't seem to be converted correctly.

This is alpha after all. There had to be some problems somewhere.

I'd like to take the opportunity to advertise the new and improved maps download section at freeciv.org. Feel free to expand this section with converted (non-commersial) Civ2 maps!
