Does Civ2 work in Windows XP

You see, I have a problem. I'm in Syria and my computer crashed, kind of. It works, but not in a normal way. Anyway, I can't play Civ2 for a long long time now. I'm going to reinstall the system saving all my stuff on an external disk. But that means replacing my Windows Millenium (don't have it anymore) with Windows XP I believe. And browsing CFC lately I encountered information that Civ2 does not work in Windows XP. That'd be a true tragedy. It wouldn't change much for now, though, for I can't play Civ2 anyway. I want to know: is it true?

Mine works fine. I had no problems when I switched my files over to a new computer.

The problem is, that, if You recall, I've lost my cds. I bought new, but I don't think I've taken them with me, and my parents won't find it. Do You think Civ will work if I simply get it all on the disk, and then back to the same comp with a new system? And a similar question: I have losts of (95% original) music on my comp. It works fine for me, but when I tried to give some to my friends, it did not work - I guess it's some defense against illegal sharing, You have to have original cd to play it on your comp. But the problem is that having the new system, will my music still work? It's like moving it to another computer after all. I've only taken a few cds to Syria

I assume so. I didn't reinstall Civ, I just copied it over to the new harddrive. I don't have a clue about the music.

I recently bought a new lap-top (XP, SP2). Like the others, I didn't reinstall, I transferred all the files in my 2.42 directory. When I tried to run it I got an error message complaining that it couldn't find wing.dll. When I transferred that from my windows directory, everything seemed fine. (And 2.42 doesn't require the CD).

Have copied my old 98-99 installs of Civ2 (in both FW and MGE format. Oh and ToT as well), over from a Windows 95 PC, to a ME, and then onto XP home and professional. Never had any problems getting it to run on any system.

nope it doesn't work.
I installed(not copied) the game onto win xp and it refused to work.
Too bad for the xps i said. They were promptly deleted and win98 reinstalled.

dont know what happened to you there,
(did you install wing?)
it is fresh installed on my XP os and it works fine,
copies of installs also work fine
(mind you win98 is a very stable os if you maintain it regularly - reg clean and so on, our record here is 19 months continuos running no crashes, shutdowns or reboots, and the only reason that was not longer was a power blackout)

I agree with those who have experienced no difficulties in installing MGE and TOT from CD's in XP. Both applications have run flawlessly on XP. My computer is a rather elderly clone with a Celeron 800 MHz processor and 512k RAM.

Uh, perhaps I should copy EVERYTHING I have on disk in case it will demand something else than wing.dll from me.

I've been using the same civ2 install since like 98 and it always worked fine on all versions as long as you just reinstall the winG each time. It even worked in chinese windows xp.

People have been making posts complaining 'it doesn't work in this version of windows' since win98 came out.

WinG was some DLL thing installed together with Civ2. It should be on your original Civ2 CD.

As well as being on the CD, it will be in the system directory of any computer on which civ has been installed. You can simply copy and paste it into your new computer. I think the name is short for windows graphics, but I've no idea what it does.
