  • The SL to Freeciv asking-for-permission thread

    Dear Scenario Leaguers,

As you all know, much of the great work that has been produced by this community, could be of great use for Freeciv as well.

But before anything can be officially added to Freeciv and published on freeciv.org, it is important to:
    1. Ask for permission (out of courtesy) and
    2. Confirm that the work can be licensed under the GPL.

That's what this thread is for.

There are currently a few pieces of unit sprites that are pending, namely:

-Two horse archer sprites by Fairline.

-One king sprite by Harlan Thompson

    Help yourself

These are better versions but they use the larger Test of Time cell height; I'm not sure if that's supported by FreeCiv?

In answer to Per's question about originality on the Freeciv thread, they were drawn from scratch.

Of the two you have posted in the freeciv thread, the second is drawn from scratch but the first used a horse derived from a civ2 original, so shouldn't be used I guess.

Damn png doesn't appear for some reason. You cn find them in this bunch of units in the zip attached.

BTW, you may struggle to find Harlan Thompson's current whereabouts....

I think we´ve also found our king unit, Top Notch Fairline!
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Thanks, but are they too tall for Freeciv? I thought the height:width ration for unit frames was fixed on the original civ2 square proportions...

If they need editing for height, then I would prefer to do it myself. Let me know.

Gareth, the pixel width and height depends on the graphic set the user chooses to use. The default graphic set uses something similar to the civ2 unit parameters but I'll have to check.

These units are absolutely fantastic, Fairline!

The standard tileset (Amplio) unit size is currently 64x48 pixels - Civ2 size IIRC. However I experimented with a 64x64 unit set and it worked as well if not better!

IMHO Amplio units should be migrated to 64x64 so that we can use other units made for ToT without resizing! Someone has to do the job though.

Thanks. There are easily enough ToT units to cover all eras for your tileset by Curt, Catfish and myself. Why don't you post your Freeciv unitset here and I'll see if I can knock together a 64x64 equivalent from ToT units.

                        Excellent idea, old chap!

If a Freeciv list is put up, we can populate it with our ToT units!
