  • Has the Rabid Rodent lost his teeth?

    Hi guys,

Just thought that I would tell you about my latest game.

2.42, Raging, Deity, Babs and landed (yes landed) in 1828.

I wish I could say that I never fired a shot in anger, but it would be a (very) slight untruth - two Greek incursions upon the sacred Babylonian soil were expelled with extreme prejudice and when post launch the combined Indian and Russian navies chose to immolate themselves against vet Mech Infs behind Coasal Defences and an Indian Bomber tried its luck against SAM - I regret that I nearly reverted to type and was forced to empty every Indian city within range of my Stealth Squadrons - but I resisted and did not capture the cities.

Yawn - you might say - but the long term residents of this forum know just how atypical this is for me!

... and it was fun! ...

mind posting a save? maybe one from around when you went to rep also?
thanks. I'm trying to trim my landing dates and stop getting so bogged down in the middle of the game.

          defrancoj,
I'll have a look and see what I can salvage - but hey - this is me (the Rabid Aggressive Rodent) just having fun - I don't pretend to have broken any records or done anything even slightly clever (this is my first landing in about five years!) would you not be better getting a save from someone here who actually knows what they are doing with anything better than Clads & Crooks?

This is the earliest save I can resurrect - all my cities are down and I am starting (rather tardily) to trade with the Indians ...

If your goal is an earlier landing--as opposed to 'just having fun'--then there is one question that will inform your every move and decision. Will this choice speed or slow the pace of my research?? For this is the key point, you cannot launch until you have reached the end of the tech tree.

Having decided that a particular action is necessary the next question should be, 'Is this the right time for this action??'

Anything that is unnecessary or untimely should be avoided. Do you really need Markets in secondary cities?? Pyramid and Great Wall are two of many WOW that may not be great trade-offs for the shields they consume. Temples can be delayed--if growth is not accelerated by a proliferation of granaries--by rushing Mono and Mike's Chapel. Getting MarcoPo to locate AIs and trade for their techs is extremely important. Delayed research of Nav and Invention coupled with an earlier start for offshore (or road connected) AI Trade will then provide the gold for Temple and Colosseum builds...plus, the Science component of the Trade will speed up those slow mid-game turns.

(The reason Markets are less than ideal in secondary cities is that maxing the Science slider lessens their impact, relative to Colosseums. Every shield is precious since you will often be working trade tiles to speed research.)

You can get by with a minimum white goods build of Temple and Colosseum in 8 to 10 secondary cities feeding a maxed out SSC. More is not necessarily better but may be useful, particularly, an occasional Courthouse in outlying cities (usually) when you have built more than the limit of cities and start getting redheads.

This is a rough summary. Better to study solo's Guide. But only if you think it will be fun.

                    Stu,

Isn't it interesting after all this time to discover a new source of pleasure from this game!!

I have a question about the map you got, if you remember.

Was it a random map or did you specify-customize the settings?? I really enjoyed getting maps with my Civ offshore to the main continent. It is trade heaven. I usually used Small land masses and Archipelagoes, but mostly got one very twisted land mass. I wish there had been a true Island setting.

                    Thanks,
                    Monk

I am playing a game, with the objective being to win. Large Map, Raging Hordes, Diety, Spotless Rep and deliberately not choosing nautical techs (map making, sea faring, navigation) until there are no other choices. If the techs come up by hut popping, simply start from save prior to pop. Game is proving quite challening. Hard to move an army inter contintental when there ain't any boats to do it....

Someone else who never lands early!

I always get distracted by the idea of getting one more wonder... building one more city... exploring that uncharted island.

And I wind up with a sprawling empire that looks good points-wise, but is no threat to land early. It's not much good getting 2 techs a turn (some turns) if you're only getting to that point it in the 1790s.

But it is fun getting to that point....

@Monk - CivMapGen has produced some nice archipeligo maps for me.

                          CivMapGen

The settings can be kind of tricky to get the hang of, but a lot of fine tuning is possible.[

Good to see someone keeping up the old ways.

As for myself, I have fallen under the sway of a new passion. Having launched (not landed) a few Civ IV spaceships, I'm attempting to win by achieving three legendary cities (culture). Civ IV players will understand what I'm talking about - the rest of you just shake your heads and mutter about new fangled inventions.
