    MALTA!

    June 19th, 1984.

Dom Mintoff, Prime Minister of Malta, leader of the Labour Party of Malta, suffered a stroke and died in office at the age of 67. Mintoff would in some ways be remembered as a hero of Malta, but others may remember him as the man who befriended Libya's military dictator Col. Mu'ammar Qadaffi.

After Mintoff's death, a potential successor cannot be found, so Malta's House of Representatives called for a new election to be held the following month, in which two of Malta's veteran politicians step up for a fierce campaign. Coming to the surprise of many, the Maltese Nationalist Party candidate wins with 53 percent of the vote.

On July 27th, 1984, Edward Adami became Prime Minister of Malta. In his first address to the nation, the new Prime Minister had stated that he wished to reconcile ties with the United States and the European Economic Community.

A few weeks have passed since. The soothing waves of seawater crash against the rocks on Valetta's beaches, as to a distance a large freighter sailing from Libya begins to come into range of Malta. Such a sight is not uncommon in Malta, for Prime Minister Mintoff had been supportive of Col. Qadaffi's regime.

This ship, however, is one of many...and it's not carrying oil or goods. Instead, thousands of Libyan soldiers are preparing for an amphibious assault on Malta's southern coastline!

    ...

Can the Maltese, under your command, expel the invaders?

    or

Can you lead the Libyans to a glorious victory?

    ...

    Find out in MALTA!

    -----

    Historical Background

Dom Mintoff was the Prime Minister of Malta until he resigned in December of 1984. He was a socialist and a friend of Col. Qadaffi's.

And believe it or not, he's still alive at the age of 88.

    -----

    Gameplay Features

Malta's pro-Western government will be able to enlist the support of the USA, the UK, and more!

Beware! Libya can do the same, and call on their allies! The Cubans, North Koreans, and maybe even more sinister characters will come to Qadaffi's aid...

Now you tell me, after I had sorted it out.

We have a saying in our family that "If all else fails, read the destructions".
Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.

Ok, booted the Lybians out by day 29.

Thanks. I only made a few minor changes from the v.2 beta, but I figured it was time to put it out for real.

I decided against multiple event files since I couldn't really think of anything to write, and I thought my single one was good enough.

Anyway, I have some ideas for a new project but nothing really decided on yet.

The F-4's shield icon needed a little adjustment, but that is easy to fix.

I have to say, the balance of unit ability is well designed, and
the scenario has that essential feeling of intensity essential
to any war situation in CIV2...The Libyans are a credible foe.

I am going to play this one through to the bitter end, and see
if NATO will come to my aid, or if the enemy will import the red
menace to make Malta's life even more hell!

                  Action Report

First impression: Looking good, RM! You put a good portion of effort into this!

And now for the gameplay ...

On day 1 I started to manage my cities and I started to develop "Aerial Warfare" - which I had ready on day 3 due to budget/specialist actions. After this, I had to cut back science spending and now every 3 turns I get a new tech.

It is day 6 now and there is not a single Lybian left on the north-western island. Only one town needs to be liberated, San Lawrenz, which was the only one to fall to the Lybian onslaught - and it will be retaken on day 7.

On the main island I lost a grand total of 9 cities - but with the F-4 available from now on I shall kick them Lybians back into the sea soon.

                  More to come soon ...

Uploaded the new file. If you're on dialup, here's the units.gif so you don't have to redownload the entire game.

On day 8 I lost Luqa - along with its strategic airfield ...

Day 10. For a couple of days the battle of Rabat rages - and still the Lybians cannot get further than the outskirts of the city. Even though my resistance cannot hold on any longer, these bladdy Lybians have not yet forced their way into the city.

Most Lybian armour is massed in the hills near Rabat - which makes counter-attacking quite tricky ... Most of my forces were concentrated here - now, on day 11, I will start moving forces to Rabat.

Day 12. Luqa has been retaken, the tide in the Eastern part of the island seems to be turning.

Day 13. Heavy fighting continues as the Lybians once more attack Rabat and Mdina. With the focus of the Maltese counter-attack being in this area, the first F-4 fighters dispatched there attack ground targets in this region.

Day 14. Renewed Lybian attacks were fought off and reinforcements from the north-western island arrive; Armoured and infantry attacks on Rabat were also halted, and a counter-attack initiated while troops moved towards the enemy from Ghajn Tufficha.

Day 15. While fighting remains heavy near Rabat, forward elements of the 1st Maltese Armoured Regt. reached the ourskirts of Bahrija and attacked. Also, fighting in the Ghazaq area remains heavy. Thanks to air support the latter region is quite safe for our troops.

Day 16. Fighting grinds down the Lybian forces in the Rabat area as well as near Ghazaq. Superior Maltese air power and numbers stop the Lybian advance.

Day 17. The counter-attack is near. Troops mass in Ghazaq as well as west of Rabat. Judgement day will come soon. The garrison of Mtarfa has been eliminated by air strikes.

Day 18. Mtarfa has been liberated while the first M48 tanks see service. While Borg-in-Nadur will fall next morning, Zebbug has been taken by infantry-armoured units.

Day 19. Borg-in-Nadur and Gudja have been liberated.

Day 20. I now researched the M60 tech - and the paratrooper info pops up. Maybe you want to edit this in the game.txt. Mqabba has been liberated, also the westernmost cities of Bahrija and Kuncizzjoni will be liberated soon.

Day 22. Bahrija has been razed in our attack - shame. Did I mention I love air power? My enemies have not used a single plane since 5 turns or so ... Zurrieq has been liberated. The Lybians developed Cuban aid. Maybe you want to give some techs to the respective enemies from time to time ...

                        Day 23. Siggiewi liberated.

                        Day 24. Mnjadra, Kuncizzjoni liberated.

Day 25. Zebbug liberated. More tomorrow.

Btw, is it intended that I playing with Malta I still cannot produce Centurions even if I have developed Armoured Warfare?

Also, once you destroyed all Lybian tanks there are no more significant threat to your cities.

It has been reported that many bemedalled generalissimos are commanding the Maltese defences and boasting of their military prowess. I, a humble son of the desert, will defeat them and conquer the decadent running-dog Maltese capitalists and their NATO and Israeli allies.

                            It's Jihad time.
