  • Empire of the Rising Sun v1.1 Ready for Playtest

Okay, my break payed off. 'Empire of the Rising Sun' v1.1 is almost complete. The Describe.txt, Game.txt, and Improvements.bmp have yet to be edited, the Readme.txt hasn't yet been updated, and the unique Chinese techs have a Nazi German icon, whilst the peaceable social techs have a skull-and-crossbones icon (very inappropriate, I know). I also am not done the option 2 branch of the events fork (Events4.txt and Events6.txt), as it still needs tweaking, as my original idea for it has been abandoned and I need more advice on the reprocussions of the Japanese actually having been winning the war. The playtest I need is largely for the trunk and option 2 branch of the events fork (Events1.txt, Events2.txt, Events3.txt, and Events5.txt), which mostly follow historical or planned operations and events. Most of the changes were suggested by AGRICOLA, but some other sources were heeded. I look forward to even your most scathing reviews. Enjoy!

Eight downloads in two day! Great to see! I look forward to any and all comments, criticism, advice, and pointed-out bugs anyone has to offer. Post here when you have something, please. I'm eagerly waiting!

Just a thought for v1.2 already. If I use the spaceship idea for the atomic bomb, I may replace the Atomic Bomber unit with the Teishi Dan - the Japanese paratroopers - a unit I wanted to include but had no room for in the last edition.

I must admit I'm a little concerned. There were a lot of downloads of this version, but in almost three weeks, no playtest results. Has anyone actually begun playtesting this version of the scen? If someone has, or soon plans to, PLEASE post here.

You're not alone on this, Patine. Check out my playtest threads. Lots of downloads, very few comments...People are lazy I guess. I'm no better myself. But I'll see if I can't check yours out, although I have already played and posted my results for a previous version. What has changed since? Did you implement any of the changes I suggested?

I implemented a broad scope of changes from a number of sources. Take a look and see! I'll get back to you on your scen too, actually.

Well, at a quick glance over the scenario, it seems you havn't changed any of the things I suggested in April 2005 on EVO (http://www.evo-games.net/Home/viewtopic.php?t=576), so for starters, here they go again:

                    * I can't find any readme. I like to get some pointers out before I start, so I know what of what I come across is intentional, and what's not. All these Japanese names tell me nothing for instance.
                    * As Japan I can build French inf. Is this intentional? And in French Indo China the French army are under my command. I know Japan took over Indo China, but did French troops actually fight on the Jap side?
                    * Winsten Churchill wasn't knighted until 1953. I think it should be "Josef" and not jozef stalin.
                    * That Hiho city east of Honolulu got razed when I attacked it.
                    * I'm not very fond of railroads in scenarios. The effect of railroad is just way to big. I'd rather see the road miltiplier raised, but I see that's alrady fairly high.
                    * The Burma road has no connection to Shunyan. It runs correctly from Kunming to Burma. Actually, having the Burma road as railroad would be the most accurate, to represent the major strategic role this road had in ww2.
                    * The communist Chinese are chopped to pieces.
                    * Wasn't Mongolia as good as state in the Soviet Union?
                    * You've used a whole lot of envents space for disalowing negotiations. By looking quickly over it, you could save some space by simply having a talker=anybody and listerner=anybody. However, I'm tired now, and there might be a talker I'm overlooking.
                    * I saw a documentary about American bomber crew stationed in the cold Attu island during the war. There they said that these few brave men kept 1/4 of Japan's air force home in the north, away from the actual fronts. Japan had no idea if an invasion would be commenced from the North at that time. Maybe you could add a B-25 or something to this island that you already have a trooper on (129,39). But then again, this would maybe be a thing the player could decide on himself, as the war has in fact just started.
                    * All in all, looks like you've done an honest and good job here. Keep it up! I'm sorry I can't be of any more help. I'm just not much of an SP player. I'm even poor in playtesting my own scens. That's why I'm glad we can always depend on the more eager community members!

                    * Btw, why doesn't the units blink as they do in MGE when it's their turn? Only the wquare around them is blinking. Get's me really confused, as in MGE when this square blinks, their turn is up.
Some of these suggestion may be obsolete, as I have no idea what has changed since the last time I played it.

Btw, the batch doesn't work, so I had to manually rename the text files.

I must have missed those suggestions, somewhere. Sorry about that. They are all worth considering for v1.2. I forgot to include the readme.txt; many apologies. The batch file works for me; I'm not sure what's wrong with that. Thanks for the advice!

I hope this helps any potential playtesters. I've attached an updated readme.txt (I know I forgot one and let it sit). Please, I need some feedback. If there's anything else I can provide, let me know.

Possibly you may have yourself to blame for this one. I just downloaded the 4 latest downloads, tried to play EOTRS and got vanilla TOT unit names and other garbage.

When posting files for downloading it might be prudent to actually download the files yourself to see if everything works properly. Two critical files seem to be missing in the latest downloads: DELEVENT and CHOICE

Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.

Ah, that would explain why my batch didn't work and I had to manually rename the files for it to work.

Another tip, Patine, try not to open a new thread for every new version. It would maybe help if you would use one thread only. Then people could subscribe to that thread only and not miss all the new ones that keeps popping up.

Though I'm usually not that effective a playtester, I'll post my results after I've played three or four full turns this evening .
