• Mysteriously locked in "safe mode"

Can't seem to get the damned thing out of safe mode.

    Advice?

    From my PC's help file...

    Does this help?

To start the computer using the last known good configuration

Print these instructions before continuing. They will not be available after you shut down your computer in step 2.
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
thanx Boco

I found the F8 thing in the windows "help" stuff apparently just a few minutes before your kind assistance. The F8 thing actually did finally bring up the screen where I could select something other than safe mode, and I was able then to put things back in normal operation . . .

except that the images I was seeing onscreen were still oversized and the wrong colors.

Went into the control panel/display thing and moved it to high color 16bit, which fixed the colors, though the sizes of the icons and general screen dimensions still seemed wrong. Moving the slider to 800x600 seemed to fix that.

Things still seem a little off, but I'm wondering if that's simply because I've been fighting with the damned thing all day and seeing the wrong size . . . so now the "right" size seems a little off. Might be entirely subjective. Doesn't help that I've been ill for the last week either. My mind isn't working at full effieciency.

I'll relax and see if everything seems ok tomorrow.

A lot of us work at 1024x768. If that's what you were using, then switching to 800x600 would make everything bigger than usual.

        Hope you feel better soon.
