  • Yep, getting cheap units ungraded is a good plan. But warriors are out. They have been replaced by pikemen. Won't be such a dramatic payoff but still a good idea.

    • Nice job, StuporMan, getting Magellan's. Thanks for making more sense and order out of the fleet, too!

      BM,

Good point about caravels, but I think they can be parked in cities while in Democracy. Meanwhile, cities can start producing more military units, if Fundamentalism is researched in lieu of using the SoL. Democracy will allow a lot of growth by celebration just before the switch to Fundamenatlism, too.

As for cheap units, many cities should be set up to be producing pikemen just before we acquire gunpowder. Then, as long as the build order does not change, they can keep producing cheaper pikemen afterwards, IIRC.

      Sharkbait,

I would not depend on the Carthaginians to discover Gunpowder for us. Whenever I have tried this in my own games, the delay is often intolerable. If they happen to be close to learning it, then if we get Gunpowder first, we can trade it to them, so that their beakers will not be wasted on it.

This game has become very fascinating and gives me an idea for a future ELG game using the same restrictions. That would be a very interesting challenge, landing early without the benefit of camels!

      • Hmmm - its easy to overestimate the AI's abilities! I guess we'd therefore need to get Gunpowder after Demo, since its on the path to hard fundy anyway.

This won't affect our production too much - we could still go for pikes and dips based on their location.

        • Have played 10 turns. 11:30pm Hong Kong time so will post tomorrow morning.

Teaser: couple of techs, bit of growth, wonder coming next turn.....

          • Here we go again.

1300(0) - not much. Decide to put ships into port so we can go Democratic and celebrate asap.

1320(1) - Change TSL to 10/60/30 to get positive cashflow again. 11 turns for discoveries. Think Demo will still be on track for the oedo year (which is 1340). Change Cunaxa to get celebration and no surplus shields for when dip completed next turn. Same for Naples.

Diplomacy - peace with Japanese and French at no cost. Swap maps with Americans and Carths. Japan offer

150g to declare war on Russia - no thanks.
Egyptians develop Bridge Building, start Economics.

1340(2) Democracy! Revolution. No Gunpower in the list so choose University over Bridges, Physics and Theology. LBH changes to SoL. Democracy established.

TSL 10/60/30 gives net 26g/turn, discoveries 7 turns. Ships almost all in port. Change to 10/50/40 for 26g still but discoveries 9 turns. Can't get Wood Lake, Great River (caravel at sea), Issus (caravel at sea) and Plum Creek to celebrate.

1360(3) - celebrations break out. The air is thick with the smoke of organically grown mood enhancers!

Do a bit of PRB. Pop now 2,820,000

1380(4) - pop 3,730,000. Now 12 dips in LBH, need 14 or so more. 163 beakers & +34g per turn, discoveries 7 turns.

1400(5) - pop 4,380,000. Quite a few celebrations have ended and I can't restore them due to lack of harbors, irrigation etc.

Meet Carths, swap Invention for University, share maps. Bridge Building is about the only tech out there we don't have at the moment. French studying democracy.

            Forked Tongue founded.

Need 370 more shields for SoL. Need to use a bit of a food shortage at LBH to get it celebrating again, but there is quite a bit of food in storage.

            Americans develop Physics.

1420(6) - Select Gunpowder ahead of Bridges, Chivalry, Economics, Medecine, Physics, Theology, Theory of Gravity.

Big Mound blows up since I moved its caravel to sea with a dip - Elvis.

Pop 4,610,000 - growth almost over.

We have 51g, discoveries every 6 turns, 185 beakers being produced per turn.

Change to 0/60/40 to speed Gunpowder. Net gold -3 per turn. Now makiing 229 beakers - hope to get GP in 1460.

French discover democracy, start SoL! They only have 539 gold which is good for us. They overthrow their government. French & Egyptians sign peace treaty.

1440(7) - Issues disorder (re caravel) - Elvis.

            French now a democracy.

1460(8) - GUNPOWDER!!! Musketeers all round (46 of them in fact)! Select Metallurgy ahead of Bridges, Chivalry, Medicine, Theory of Gravity.

Pop 4,890,000 and all celebration growth has stopped.

TSL to 10/60/30 for +41g per turn and new discoveries every 5 turns. Only 6g in the bank.

Big Mound needs 2 Elvises. It has -2 food so going to build the settler it supports into Casa de Arbol (which will then be size 3 and start to celebrate)

Big Mound caravel reaches port so this should be OK now. No food shortage.

20 dips now in LBH - need 23 for SoL.

Russians capture Japanese city of Osaka.

1480(9) - Just need a couple more dips to arrive in LBH for SoL.

Big Mound settler built into Casa de Arbol.

            Green Sleeves founded.
            Green Point founded.

1500(10) - Casa de Arbol celebrates. Great River disorder due to caravel. Same for Point of Rocks. Ships make port - ok next turn.

Disband 22 dips and pay 36g to complete SoL.

Status at the end Pop 4,940,000. 53 gold (+41g per turn). Discoveries every 5 turns. Metallurgy 3 turns away I think.

So we are close to the finally! Next set should be interesting. Or we could await conscription (rifles) or even 1 more tech for those crazy fanatics.

We can change out of Democracy next turn if desired and start a build up of units. The ships will need to be put back into place I'm afraid but they're not too far away from where they started.

There are lots of dips still being built, but not sure what wonders (if any) we're after next. We're getting close to some of the "forbidden techs" like Steam Engine where we have to finish all other techs offered first. So that only really leaves Adam Smith (yawn - unless we build a bunch of barrcks) or JS Bach which isn't a big deal in fundy. So we may need to change that all to mass mouseketeer production.

            Here's the save:

Still not convinced that The Lady buys you much in this game - and must disagree with your assessment of good old Johann - don't forget that the sound of rousing organ music raises money in every one of your cities ...

I couldn't remember when I posted whether Bach worked for anything under Fundy (must say I don't use it often). Or does it just work in terms of celebrating? So we could pick it up when the opportunity arises - assuming the bloodbath doesn't finish before we get there...

Not much on the horizon in terms of other wonders, and nice to able to pick and choose govt's with SoL. And we can ramp up our shield production now that the support issue can be suppressed with fundy.

Looking back, I should have done something in terms of marshalling the troops into groups for launching at the enemy. which begs the question - who are we going to smash first? The units could still be moved this turn actually.

                • Great Turnset Sharky!
Establishing Demo, discovering Gunpowder, doubling population, and building SoLin 10 turns is amazing with these retrictions.

We lurkers like the organized log too.

Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

Because as animal loving greenies, we don't believe in animal husbandry (or wifery for that matter). So no camels allowed to pull our caravans.

Dips then are the best way to make wonders since they don't cost any shield support.

I'm not sure if Elephant is still taking part; otherwise Old n Slow is the player who hasn't played for the longest time.

                          • Small chance of my getting to this tonight, otherwise Sunday or Monday. If anyone else wants to jump in, feel free -- otherwise I'll take a set of turns as noted.

I wonder -- does pillaging affect reputation?

Pillaging, in RL, would be considered an act of war. In the game, if you are not already at war, you will get a dialog box with two buttons, cancel action or proceed; along with a discussion that reminds you of the existing peace treaty and warning you that continuing will damage your reputation.

So, better provoke them into war first--if you aim to maintain a spotless reputation.
