  • Getting started making a scenario

I only did a quick check, and if this already exists I'm sorry, but how do I get started making a scenario? What I mean is how do I create the map, put on the civs, edit rules.txt etc.

Well, for one, you need to decide which game to use. Civ2 MGE or TOT.

After that you need to take inventory on what files you will want to modify. I suggest taking a look at what others have done and going from there.

Be sure, if you are using someone elses graphics or maps that you cite them as creators of thos graphics or maps.

Oh yeah, what's the scenario going to be about?

I'd like to do a ToT scenario because I don't actually have MGE

I suppose the major files to modify are rules.txt and the unit graphics, along with actually creating the scenario. What I'm not sure about is the creating a scenario. Should I make rules.txt changes before making the scenario 9through cheat mode?) or the other way around?

I haven't decided what the scenario is going to be about yet. I just want to experiment a bit to see what I can do.

Well, ideally, you would want to work on the rules.txt only and save the in-game editing for unit and improvement placement.

I also suggest going here http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...=Category:Tips and reading up on ToT. The game had a lot of improvements over MGE and got rid of some of the more annoying problems like pallete limitations, small event space, and sound limitations.

          Scenariomaking in a nutshell

          Scenariomaking in a nutshell:

First of all, find a topic. Go to the library, rent some book and read up on your subject. Internet also is a great source.

          Then...:

          1. Start new game on pre-selected map. Chose "King" difficulty, how many civs you want, villages only, don't restart eliminated players.
          2. Open cheat menu. Edit kings, treaties, attitudes, civ names etc. Save game. Edit the rules you want to apply for your scen (forbid government switching etc.).
          3. Place cities, modify city sizes, cheat irrigation, mines, farmland, roads, RRs etc.

          4. Chose what improvements, wonders and units to include.
          5. Create a tech tree
          6. Connect improvements, units with the new tech tree.
          7. Modify unit stats.
          8. Cheat improvements, wonders and units ingame...
          9. Create Events.
          10. Create a readme, edit the other text file (pedia, game etc).
          11. Modify the rest of the rules (cosmic rules, terrain rules, governments etc.)
          12. Save the game as a scenario in the cheat menu.

Do all of this in the first turn. Do not hit enter. Remember to save and backup as you go.

That's mostly the creation of the scenario (in a nutshell). Then you have to create/find graphics, playtesting and balancing. If you intend to make a good scenario, it can take you hundreds of hours.

There are dozens of great and detailed guides in the 'cradle of civilization' section.

          Hope this answers your question.

            Dumb-ass question

How can I use MapEdit to convert a .bmp map to a Civ II map?

              Open BMP in graphics editor.
              Load MapEdit palette.
Paint map with colours corresponding to terrain type. Check the Palette Editor in MapEdit for those.
Resize map to a maximum of 32767 pixels.
              Save.
Should have an 8-bit BMP with MapEdit's palette.
              Run MapEdit.
              Open BMP file.
              Save as type MP.
Clean up map in official Civ2 map editor (use the one modified by Mercator).

              Nice necro.
