    Another sadly misguided lager-drinker

Which English beer/ale did you try?

I have to side with my artistic friend, here. While Germanic yellow lagers are fine fare, they all pretty much taste the same, don't they? English ales, on the other hand, have a wide variety of wonderful colors and tastes. My favorite is Double Diamond.

Sure as hell English ales do taste different - I for one will keep the faith to the middle European lagers. Also, English ales do not seem to feature too much carbonic acid ...

Anyway, you are right about these things, Curt. So much to see, so little time ...

They still make that stuff for Canada?? Double Diamond went out of production here about 20 years ago along with Watneys Red Barrel and several other homogenised keg bitters. I hope the stuff you get in Canada ain't the same as the DD they used to sell here in the 70's.....

BTW, the only English beer I came across in Canada was Boddingtons. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough?

@Steph: I'll send you a pint of Fuller's London Pride and you'll realise the error of your ways. Carlsberg, really!

@ Boco: I almost would have taken this as an insult. Yankees do not brew beer, they make soft drinks

@ Gareth: Maybe it is I am not really used to English ales, I think I will keep trying

I read somewhere that american beer was made to wash down whisky with, beacause there whiskey tasted so horrible that they needed somthing to wash it down with
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!

The rule of thumb with American beer is: a beer's taste is inversely proportional to its advertising budget. I'll 'fess up to liking Harpoon, Sam Adams, Pete's Wicked, and Anchor Steam. Fairline, I gotta dig up that email where you described US beer as something like pasteurized piss. That's still got me ROTFL.

Long ago I went to a Tuborg brewery. Don't remember much other than the export version was much worse than the domestic fare.

I gotta say, UK is worth visiting for the brew alone. They need it with their culinary reputation.

                        [Edit]
                        From Wikipedia
Within the above areas (Greater Glasgow), Buckfast is alleged to be the drink of choice for drinkers who are prone to committing anti-social behaviour when drunk, especially underage drinkers. Its high strength (15% alcohol by volume/14.8% in Southern Ireland) combined with its low price and sweetness mean that many find Buckfast to be the ideal means by which to become drunk as quickly and cheaply as possible.
@ CS (sublime taste of 'buckie') and Fairline

Apologies about the continuing OT nature, but I just had to comment on this. Curt, I can't believe I've finally met a Scot that doesn't like Irn Bru! It's disgusting; I can't for the life of me understand how so much of the population drink it!

(Incidentally, Irn Bru plays no small part in Glaswegians having the worst dental records in Europe)!

Do you mean you don't like brains on toast or pig's blood black pudding? What's the matter with you Boco? I'd probably better not mention ******s and peas 'cos that'll lead to all sorts of trans-Atlantic innuendo....

I tried Sam Adams in Chicago and liked it BTW

Judging from the name and the color, I'd guess it has Ferric ions in it. Taste like rust?

Since we're on about bonny Scoatland, fairline, don't forget Haggis in your list of delicacies. ******s, I don't remember. I thought Fags were smoked not eaten.

                                [Edit]
I got curious and checked Irn Bru in Wikipedia. Tech, lucky you, it seems to be licensed in a decaffeinated form in Canada. Seems that orange isn't all rust — it's not legal in US, Norway, and Finland on account of its dyes.

Surely, this should be a WoW in some scenario!

Seems Scotlands influence in Russia didn't end with Barclay de Tolly!

                                I googled black pudding -- it's foul!
