  • Help, I'm burning up!!

OK here's my problem. We're having an unseasonally hot summer here in Blighty (32°C in the E. of England this week) and my PC is refusing to run any version of civ without overheating and shutting down. I guess old programs like civ are processor-hungry causing melt-down with the already toasty P4 chip in my computer.

I have opened up the case, replaced the processor fan and heatsink with a fancy-pants copper affair and I have a domestic fan blowing full-blast into the computer's guts. Still no joy

I have installed 'Motherboard monitor' and it is recording the following temperatures: 'Winbond 1 - 38°C, 'Winbond 1 - 91°C and Winbond 3 - 49°C. Does anyone know what this winbond nonsense means? Are they HD temp, processor temp and A.N.Other temp? Are these temperatures excessively hot for a P4 3.2 GHz (I'm guessing the 91°C temp is way too high)?

Can anyone suggest a solution other than installing AC in my house? Please help - I need my civ fix

A/C Window unit, $100 USD. It'll keep you and the computer cool. A/C units run at about 98% efficiency nowadays so your utility bill won't be affected to much.

Much easier than all this monitoring mumbo jumbo.

I have my computer running with the side panel off and a regular fan blowing air into the side of it, keeps my cpu running at 34°C,
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!

I definitely agree with HT on this one Gareth, its one of those instances where the simplest solution is indeed the correct one. A cooler room will make for a cooler P4 processor, heck I remember in my old job we had a window unit mounted in each and every office running full blast in the summer for just that very reason.

[SIZE=1] (I'm guessing the 91°C temp is way too high)?
a couple more degrees and you could fry an egg on your processor

If you're willing to pay the cost, I can ship dry ice from our lab. Btw, I moonlight as a promotions manager for for Snapple ( http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...sicle_disaster ).

Isn't 55°C about the temp for washing dishes? Occasionally our clean water supply spurts forth at 80°C. Makes the container to hot to handle.

Can your home power handle both the AC and a PC? My AC triggers a brownout when it kicks on during heat emergencies. Had to get a new UPS for the PC.

My buddy had the same trouble and said that making sure the PC is not
tucked in a corner and that cool air is circulating through the system helps a lot.

Directed AC cooling may be a good idea. Perhaps hitting the local Argos or Index
to see what house hold power fans they have in stock might be in order?

Here in normally cold, dismal Scotland, the summer is also sweaty and horrid.

Oddly, my system is not showing any adverse effects.
Must be the only well-behaved computer I ever bought...

That was one hell of an ice pop!

Window-mounted AC as suggested by Harry is probably too tricky - I have one of those modern homes with tiny double-glazed UPVC windows. The memsahib would complain about the cost too!

You've given me an idea though Boco; I'll pipe up my water supply to the PC - should save me a fortune in hot water

I thought the weather was ****ty up north this week C.? A mate in Dundee was complaining about the rain. Maybe it was hot rain

My PC has the side of the case off with an Argos fan blowing into it, and it's still f-hot

Perhaps there is some software that can regulate the actions of the CPU?

Maybe force it to run at a lower level?

Acelogix do a good program called tweak n' tune.

I can email it to you, if thou wishes!

I use it to refigure my PC's workings, it may help take some pressure off of your cooking chips!

                        Incoming!

Also, it might be worth looking around the net for free software that deals with CPU control.

I am sure there must be something to let the hardware run at a less stressful rate...

it's going up to 35°C. this week, and with the humidity it will feel like 41°C , i think i am going to try and find a used refrigerator to store my computer in,
