  • Would you like to buy a bridge?

After making the skyscrapers, I'm continuing to push the limits of Civ2 graphics.

This mod makes use of the railroad, mountain, hill, and river tiles.

    Specific details:

    Hills = Freeways.

Mountains = Bridges. The horizontal bridge uses the single tile. Curves, T and X intersections are not used.

RRs = connectors for bridge to freeway.

Rivers = To get the bridges to render without a coastline, all the coasts were blanked. To make the coasts less hard edged, all coast tiles are rivers, and the rivermouth is that swampy shoreline.

Gonna retouch the coastline corner graphics, I just realized that some of them won't ever show up around the bridges and can be used. Preliminary gfx will be uploaded tomorrow.

Wow, it even works with bridges! Those are done very well!

Plus, this might be of interest for FC.

At the forum over there I've seen these sort of request for a special "bridge" or "canal"-tile appear on a number of occasions. I always considered those requests a bit superfluous. Isn't a canal nothing more than a line of interconnected ocean squares on a map? And the same goes for landbridges. It could already be done, Red Front already had a bridge unit that hides a land tile underneath it. With enough engineers you can change ocean into land and build a short landbridge (in FC you need a min of 3 land squares nearby before you can turn ocean into land)

I think i'm understanding all those request for canals and bridges a bit better now. I was just stuck in my own paradigm to see it. The issue isn't about designing a map with ocean squares as "canals" or a "landbridge"-tiles. It's really about a terrain tile that can be used both my naval and land units! Sort of a special road tile that allows two different unit types to use it.

In which case there is a place for canals and bridges in Civ! Although I don't know how tricky it us to implement something like that in FC.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Here are the bridge and freeway and coast terrain tiles- Kobra, yes, you can adapt them to Mafia.

Note that I've moved the hills to the forest slot for global warming mechanics reasons.

You could use the river tiles over bridges to blanl their coastlines and keep regular coastlines untouched...

That doesn't work since the coast is added to the outside of the bridge tile (on the adjacent water tiles)

Even if river mouths are all blue water?

Hmm, that's a good idea, I'll give it a try.

                              EDIT: Works!

Not only that, but the non-intersecting river tiles have now been freed up for use as other things... I'm thinking Tunnels.
