welllllllll.... it comes from when the first wave of white
people came to the eastern coast of america and set up
a settlement... the first winter was harsh and some died.
then that spring they had contact with indians that showed them how to grow corn ..they had a good harvest that fall and were thankful to be alive ... so there was some sort of celebration.. because they knew they were better prepared to survive the winter. there was renewed hope of making a go of the settlement.
there are a lot of myths about the actual celebration..
but it is really the thankfulness for what we have that is what thanksgiving is about... being thankful to be alive , to have family close, to have food , shelter ... thats it.

Thanks! I should have looked it up - too lazy...

We celebrate Australia Day on Jan 26 when in 1788 Governor Philip brought the First Settlement to Sydney Cove. Aborigines regarded that as an 'invasion' though. Our first settlement was doomed for failure too, ie starvation; but I can't rfemember if it was the Aborigines that saved us or what... later...
