  • The Battle of Waterloo

Anyone got a decent map, or any info that could help me for that matter, of the Battle of Waterloo, so I can start working on this Napoleonic baby!

This is the best one I have, and it's not detailed or big enough...

Oh man, I'm amazed no one thought of this before! Great idea!

Any idea on the units? John Ellis made some rather unique units in his "Bonaparte" scenario.

Havn't thought that far yet, first I want to make the map But I love those units, so I won't exclude the chance of using something from that one, if not Fairline can cook up something. He told me a while ago he would do me some Napoleonic units. But he's a busy man, so I won't base it on him.

A friend of mine has the Avalon Hill game. I can offer to scan the manuals / OOB's if you want... i could also take a photo of the board.

              Great idea for a scenario.

I would second using many of Ellis's units - they are simply superb.

I'll bet Fairline has a book or site on this! In the meantime, this is from Breakaway Games' "Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle"

Great idea! Waterloo was a fairly set-piece battle, so it would be easier to handle. Napoleon just made a series of frontal assaults against the English line, until the Prussian army arrived on his flank.

One problem is the artillery, since there are no ranged units in Civ2. You could give them the sub flag, and make cannon balls as missiles. It would be akward to move the cannons, since land subs don't carry their missiles with them, but you can move the cannon balls second and land on the cannons.

I wouldn't recommend the A-H version of Waterloo, if it's the one I used to play when I was, um, younger. The map is of the Waterloo campaign, not the battle, and is inaccurate as well. I'm sure there are lots of good maps of the battlefield on the internet, as well as excellent OOB info. Good luck!

Blimey, I'd thought about doing a Waterloo scenario as well, until I remembered I don't make scenarios :

I've got detailed OOBs Eivind (Boco knows me too well ) and I can't resist having a go at the units if you're serious about this.

The few vague ideas I had about this included the following:

As Tech says, the battle largely consisted of a series of frontal assaults by the French, largely on the the Farmhouses of La Haie Sainte and Hougoumont. Make the French the human side if it's going to be SP, and have the Anglo-Dutch AI positions as fixed, move 0 units. Events generate mobile AI units to simulate the various Allied counterattacks, including the charges made by British light and heavy cavalry and of course the arival of the Prussians. Perhaps give them a series of mobile units to firefight with, like the 95th Rifles.

Cities would include the key farmhouses, as well as positions like the sandpit and brigade HQ's on the Allied line.

I guess it would be easier / better as a 2-player PBEM though....

Count me in if you want a hand.

Yeah, I though of that aspect of the battle as well. So I though of something like Pablostuka did for his never released 'Battle of Belchite', with cannons as airbases and the cannon shells as missiles. Someone else sure must have done the same, but this was were I got the idea. Or I could go with the sub idea to have different types of cannons.

I googled for an hour or so looking for good maps, and the one posed on the top was the best one I could find. Someone else must hold the key to some secret places though I need a detailed OOB map to look at while placing units, and to draw the map.

Sure, I'm serious! As soon as I get a map, I'll get right on business!

My attempt on a French Line Infantry .... Sorry, but I do like th Bonaparte II multi-units too much for Napoleonic scenarios.

If you want, I will make more of those chaps
