  • Events Editor Error

The last three times I've used the 'Text' effect on the events editor, upon finishing typing the text I'd like to display, the computer pauses when I click 'OK,' then gives me an error message (one of the generic Windows XP ones, without real details), and then shuts down Civ2, and I lose all data since my last save. This didn't used to happen, and I want to know what's wrong and what I can do about it.

Patine, the only thing I can tell you is; thank goodness for the fact that you don't need the Events Editor to create an events file. Hell, I'm the laziest person you know of and I use every editor that'll work, but the Events Editor is buggy like that. I don't use it.

As long as you can create it manually, I wouldn't sweat it. Making an events file yourself just takes some practice and 1 piece of advice; Check EACH event as you make up the file to see that EACH one works smoothly. The trick is this; if there is trouble, then you'll know immediately due to the error message. Or if it fails to fire at all, you can check that by playing around with a savegame or copygame by changing the number of turns elapsed.

The added perk is that there are some Orders available ONLY if you create it yourself--the editor won't do those orders.

Thanks a lot Exile. I appreciate the tip. I know you need to manually edit Events files to generate barbarian units. What else can you only do with manual editing?

I never trust the CIV2 editor, as it was not made properly and only added in as an afterthought, I think.

Learning the macro text typing is really easy!

Creating barb events, better text layout, and a bug free creation
of game effects are the main advantages of manual text file making.

As long as the simple CIV text language rules are met, things always work.

In fact, creating a scenario without the editor is something all creators should be aiming at.

It's not as scary as you think!

I love making tech trees in PFE editor, just as a matter of fun.

I wish someone could make a text editor that produces rules and events files properly!

        hint, hint!
