    Dear Apolytoners,
I'm just writing a Strategy Guide for CIV II in German.
Since Apolyton and its members are the source of all civ knowledge, I'd like to translate some of the really very excellent threads. It's nearly impossible to name all the masters of civ who share their experience with the common folks like me.

Some of them (the order has no special meaning)
    Solo
    Samson
    Slow Thinker
    Elephant
    Ming
    Rah
    Ribannah
Oedo and so on and so on

And for me its also nearly impossible to ask everyone of them if he or she allows the translation.
So, if anyone doesn't like this, reply in this thread.

The Strategy Guide will be in German (called The Civilinic Books), but an English version will be available some months later, so the original text will be unchanged.
And there will be a reference to the author.

There will be two differnt versions - one for downloading, one with some PHP-Functions and a MYSQL-Database for online reading.

It's only for non commercial purposes, just to spread the knowledge of Civilization II and keep the game alive.

Psst. You forgot the Scouse Gits' sterling work.

Anyway, we won't pick hairs. My contribution is much greater at CFC than here, if only because the coverage is so comprehensive at 'poly, but if I've made any useful posts then feel free to translate them into whatever languages you'd like. This would seem to be a pretty major undertaking and I wish you lukc with it.
I assume you'll be starting with the Great Library...

I won't make a copy of the GL, but I want to show some strategies, the peaceful ones and those for warmongers, naval strategies, Xinnig, OCC, Early Landing and whatever I may find.
Trade will take several chapters, then terraforming.
I'm a supporter of celebrating fundamentalism and communism.
At CFC and at the german Civilization Webring Formum
      I call myself sethos

Be careful though - there's a lot of rubbish out there that has been written about Civ 2. Anything that begins with the line: "This tactic is the best way to play Civ 2 and I never play any other way," or anything like that, is utter bosh and can be safely ignored for your work.
I wasn't too impressed the last time I checked the really old strategy guides on the 'poly main site.

Some of those people have disappeared, but I don't think anyone would object to non-commercial use of our commentary on Civ2. Footnoting, credits or bibliography would seem to be appropriate, hotlinks if it is going to be on-line.

Yes, a few new strategy guides would not be amiss at CFC...

There's no best strategy - it depends on the situation. It's adifference whether you're alone on a huge continent or if you have (unfriendly) neighbors.
Sometimes the strategy depends on the tech you have developped or found in some huts.
Sometimes you must do just the contrary of the stratgey
you have chosen - that's why a human player is superior to the AI.
A strategy guide shows the directon, not the exact way.
            I don't want to write a civ2-bible.

              I agree with Elephant.

I'm glad that you have no plans to write a Civ 2 bible, and think that you should make it clear in the foreword (or whatever), that Civ 2 is by its nature a game that cannot be played at the highest level by sticking religiously to one strategy, and that different approaches are required depending upon the circumstances of each game. It'd be tough to explain all of the different situations in which different strategies might be useful too, so I suggest that Chapter One would amount to nothing more than:
Go and play Civ 2. For at least a week or so. Then once you have a decent understanding of how everything works, come back and read Chapter Two.

ramses, if you could get permissions from the authors we could also do a print edition (without any profit, even for apolyton) on our store. all we would need is a pdf editing tool (once you have the offline version ready)

Sometimes it's hard to get the permissions of the authors - because their email addresses have changed or their homepages have moved - so I get broken links.
But I'll try - and as I promised, the download of the StratGuide is free. I'd be very proud if it would be published here at Apolytons - the greatest CIV2-Forum of the world.

You have my permission (but I'm afraid that, apart from "3 arrows", "twin cities" and "the ultimate weapon", it's mostly tidbits).

Non, non, monsieur - - your name will appear in the scenario section, too - your strategies in some scenarios
will fit exactly in the StratGuide
There are many other excellent threads worth to be translated - what about your help for a French translation?

If the Strat Guide is no more than 2 pages long, it's OK
Otherwise, I suppose that clever people from Switzerland like my friends Julius and Cyrion would perhaps agree to give a helping hand (and I would be willing to correct their mistakes, of course ).
