Hi everyone,
Just a message to explain why all the games have stopped with me. After the error I got when loading one of my saves, which stopped me loading warlords at all, I decided to do the much overdue system reinstall. I am now up to system install 5 and still have no luck getting warlords running. I have tried
- a slipstream disk with SP2, updates, applications and drivers preinstalled
- a slipstream disk with SP2, updates and drivers preinstalled
- a slipstream disk with SP2, updates and just essential drivers preinstalled
- a slipstream disk with SP2 and updates preinstalled
My last attempt was to just use my original retail 1st release XP disk. When installing from this disk it only displayed the first partition on my drive, which has 2 partitions. I exited that and used the previous disk which worked, but this time it showed the first partition and the second partition as unpartitioned space. The second partition is where I keep all the files and installers and serial numbers I don't want to lose during a reinstall. I exited that install and just tried to reboot windows, but just got a flashing cursor. I'm guessing the 1st release disk doesn't handle SATA drives properly.
So at this stage I'm looking at another reinstall, which all my installers, serial numbers, data files, save games, and oblivion character gone. Not overly happy about that. Furthermore, with all these problems I'm actually starting to think it's a hardware problem with either the video card or power supply, neither of which I can afford to replace at the moment.
In case anyone has any suggestions here what was happening. After the reinstall, I'd install Civ and Warlords. Starting Warlords would get up to the point where the menu is supposed to display, but all I got was the blue shaded background that the menu usually appears on top of. The display would then drop to 4 colours and display an error saying the nv4 something dll was not working properly (the nvidia display driver). Loading vanilla civ4 would display the menu, but trying to start a game would only display the controls, not the map, then that same error. I have tried the 93.** beta drivers, which I know worked before, the 94.** whql drivers and the newest 162.15 beta drivers, all with the same effect. I can run all the 3D tests in dxdiag utility. I also tried disconnecting all the internal power cables from everything except the graphics card, HHD and CD-ROM. All gave the same effect.
The only thing I can think of to do now is to buy a playstation and throw the PC in the fire! Especially if I can't get my data back. I'll have to try a partition magic recovery disk and see what I can save.
Anyway that's the reason fo the delay. I really have no idea when it will be running again and if it is the graphics card, it ould be many weeks. Sorry about the delay. If you would prefer, I can give you my passwords and someone else can play my turns until I get my PC running again.
EDIT: Oh should have said this applied obviously to all the games I'm playing. I put it in this thread as everyone I play with in other games all play this game.Comment
