I modified a file using a program to adjust research costs, build times, etc. and failed to backup the file; now I can't play any email turns. I changed everything back to defaults but still no go.

On the brightside I really liked the results of my adjustments, and am playing best single player civ4 game I have ever played

Thats why I had to quit doing single player mods because I screwed up something in downloading and ended up having to uninstall everything but once I did, it was ok I just had everyone do a resend.

But had to uninstall mods as they were actually coming through a game with me and Vovan....

I plan on finishing this game by tommorow, and then hopefully a reinstall of the patch will fix everything.
