Well, the only way to go is remove the files from the assets folder and put them into mods, I believe... The game doesn't know that the mod is set to 'default' behavior... All it knows is, hey look, there are new files. And so it doesn't like that. The reason this game behaves that way and others don't is there is a special setting in the games set up screen. I enabled it because our last game didn't go to the hall of fame, and I was wondering if it would if we had the exact same mod setup, unlike last time. Sorry for the inconvenience.
BTW, by assets directory, do you mean the one in the game installation location, or the one under customassets in my documents\my games etc? If it is the former, then moving into customassets might help... But moving to mods directory and not loading the mod for the save will definitely help.
