is the seemingly slow starts in a city

Well, I don't really know the secret. If I did, I'd playing on higher difficulties than noble.

It seems to me like getting some military going, however, is crucial in this game. What with raging barbs an all!

BTW, animals don't enter cultural borders, so the cities are safe so far. Not the explorers though.

Looks to me like the Chinese are sort of blocking our expansion West. I'm thinking with our first couple of cities, we can block them off and have the eastern part of the continent to ourselves.
