  • [PBEM] Golden Bear vs Shogun Gunner

Its the matchup of the writer versus the illustrator. Will the writer's pen or the painter's brush win this war?

Will the bear maul the Samurai...or will the Samurai ginsu the bear?

It's a face off between two friends...stumbling and bumbling through cIV as they both refuse to read the manual.

Let's discuss map settings, civ choices, and other settings. We can then also use this thread for the tracking.

I didn't know that we needed reservations to get into this place!

BTW, I've read the manual - after playing most of a game of course and found it wanting in many, many ways.

For instance, it is not clear about the actual effects of culture.

Another: when describing "Emancipation" it says, "... gives unhappiness penalty for civilizations not employing this civic."

Does this mean that when I am in Emancipation that all the other civs are getting hammered?

We need the MMs to get to work and decipher the underlying systems of this game.

        Meantime we'll just bumble on.

          Game Settings

          Here is what I propose:

          Terran or Continental World

Standard or Large - leaning towards Large

          Temperate Climate

          Average or low sea level

          Noble difficulty

          Normal game speed

Random Civ/Leader for both of us

            okay...no objections.

What's Terran? Is that like pangea? If so, then continental world.

I like large size also. I agree to other settings you list.

I don't know about the difference between Continental and Terran.

Here's what the informative manual says:

"Terran" Worlds are very similar in layout to Earth.

"Continental" Worlds are multiple landmasses separated by oceans.

Maybe Continents is the best choice.

I'm restarting if either of us has the XXXXXXs as our civ, OK?

I insist. I've had enough of that!

Hmmm... I guess I'll use my gmail account -- I don't know the SMTP address offhand....unless its SMTP.GMAIL.COM but that would make too much sense, no?

I went ahead without it - I think that you can add it in when you get the game.

I did a preview of your civ (sorry) to make certain that you have a suitable civ. You are Mao of the Chinese and I am Mansa Musa of the Malinese.

I start with a settler, which I plopped to make Timbuktu, and a warrior.

I had to decide between worker or warrior right away. I chose warrior. I have a banana tree next to my hut - you'll see it when you visit - which gives 3 food but no hammers. I figure that I can boom the population a little while taking longer on the warrior. It would be 8t for the warrior if I used a forest with I think 11t growth.

As it is I am doing 10t warrior with 7 or 8t growth.

I seem to be landlocked. My warrior is just starting to explore.

I figure it is ok to share lots of info at the start so that we can discuss what the best choices would have been.

Go home and play the save now. Forget work!

The game name is Pen vs. Paintbrush Round 1.

I'm good with sharing info. No problem looking at my civ. This is more cooperative than competitive.

I wish I could forget work.

I'll play tonight -- if I can figure out how.

That will be an issue! You'll learn for both of us. See if you can figure out how to do it live and we can try that - the wife works tonight and I have no life outside of Civ.

Well, that probably is true for any 'Polytonite, isn't it?

                          Yippee! CivIV PBEM!

I got to be on the lowdown about the game. My wife thinks I spend too much time on Poly and Civ.

                            She's right...at least a little bit.

I might try to install it to my laptop and see if that works.

What's running in your laptop? What kind of processor and video card? I'm running with a P4 3Ghz, 512M RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon x600 graphics card.

                              That seems to run fine.

But don't fuss with your anti-aliasing in the options menu unless you want a system lock up.

Wives exist to make certain that we don't become Civ-playing hermits who never wash and only eat fast food - although I pretty much only eat fruit and veggies. Well, and meat of course.

Treat her right and your Civ time will improve!
