As a back up what do people think of Korea? We'd get the Hwacha, start with mysticism and mining, plus the UB is a more powerful (and double production since our leader is philosophical) university.

Zara of the Holy Roman Empire would have been good if out REXing everyone was our goal. As it is we have Liz but I really like her attributes (Phi, Fin) as they're the two strongest in the game so finding someone with a decent UU and who's UB is either a bank or a university seems key since we can build both of those at double speed. My only worry about Liz of Korea will be how long it will take to build courthouses especially if other players have the ability to build discount courthouses.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

We've got a long time to go till it is our time to pick again. Seven of the nine teams will have picked a civ by the time we get to pick ours. So who knows what will be available.Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012

Just an observation from the last MTDGs I played in:
In the CFC game where I was in Team Merlot, early contact was crucial, tech trading was on. But the tech trading was not as important as the early alliance between Team Amazon ( Darius) and Team Sirius(William)
I agree with TMIT that establishing the tech alliances first will be the most important thing to do. Immortals can help us with this, because they are very tough against barbs so they are more effective at scouting for neighbors on land than the other early units. One of Kazakhstan's early errors was a failure to take advantage of chariots for scouting and barb-busting. It was probably the biggest factor that led to getting trapped in the bottleneck.
It seems to me that we should place a premium on early contact. In the last game, the first teams that met formed the more powerful alliance. I am betting that some of our rivals will be following the FIN techmonger strategy. With Cyrus, we will need to yoke ourselves to multiple techmongers quickly and then spread our cities with our IMP trait while they subsidize our tech. We can offer to be the "security" of the alliance, we offer the Brawn while they provide the brain.
Meeting our rivals fast, fast, fast is critical. If we are on the coast, as most team will likely be, we should send a scout workboat out almost immediately (maybe send one in the opposite direction as well). I can understand getting a worker and, maybe a second city first, but after that we need to send out the scouts. Then we have to prioritize getting a couple Immortals out to send scouting on land. Immortals are key, because with their defense capability, they will be much safer from barbs than a scout or warrior. At any rate, we have to meet our neighbors first, before our rivals do.
With any luck, the Map will be designed in a way that allows us to get a 4 team alliance that will overpower 2 of the other teams quickly.
It is different in this game (with tech trade off) but I learned that early contact is crucial to forming alliances. Teams meeting tend to want to work together. (RB excluded)Last edited by Hercules; June 12, 2012, 20:02.On the ISDG 2012 team at the heart of CiviLIZation
