Anna Hatun, former leader of the Ottoman armies lay face down on the prisoncell floor. Her assailant had cut her ropes before he left, but it was still dark and she felt little desire to move. The dirt floor was soft and slightly chilled, but at the moment that was better than the thought of moving. She felt the drying mud on her face, sweat and tears of pain had mixed with the dirt floor. She did not care to brush it away, instead she tried to focus her mind on somewhere else, cheerful memories. She had few. Her recent experience seemed to return in her mind to taunt her. Again and again the assault in the dark kept interfering with her attempts to free her mind. Was this part of Igor's torture? Or was it just some perverted perk for her jailor? She had expected it to some extent. Russian soldiers were not known for their kindness to captives. This was nothing unusual in the age, certain armies even advertised such activities as the rightful prerogative of victorious armies. A great motivator for the boys. She felt nauseous by the thought of it. She would not let their barbarism break her. She felt pain, but the pain she could suffer through. It was her mind that they were attempting to destroy. She considered if she would have been better off taking the man's offer of quick death. No, she would not be broken. They could inflict any attack on her body, but she would not allow them to touch her mind. Defiance was her only weapon, her only remaining strength, they would not be allowed to take it from her. She would not waiver or falter. Either she would survive in the dungeon or die with pride.

The door opened. Her heart stopped for a second, then started hammering furiously. Her body reacted with panic. Had he returned to abuse her again? Was this King Igor's men coming to take her to torture or trial? Her mind raced, but she maintained her cool. Lying still for a second she carefully gathered dirt in her right hand, ready to throw it in the face of her captor should she get the opportunity. If she could distract him shortly, perhaps he had a weapon she could take. If escape was impossible, killing the bastard that had raped her would certainly award her with a moment of vengeance, even satisfaction. She turned her head slightly to view the doorway, to see what was happening. Again the light was strong compared to the utter blackness of the room, but this time the person entering the room carried a torch. The door was closed again, but the torch gave a soft flickering light that allowed her eyes to adjust and see shapes and forms again for the first time in what she felt must be weeks in the dark.

As her eyes adjusted she saw a blurred shape carrying something darkish in one hand, torch in the other. The figure was small and unassuming. Was this him? A puny little man? She felt a glimmer of haughty contempt for the pitiful creature that he must be. But as the image grew clearer she saw that it was not a man. An old woman was standing still in front of the door, holding a bucket in her hand. Anna Hatun slowly rolled over on her side and pushed herself up to a half-sitting position. The old woman wore a traditional Hairy Hastogian Priestess dress. When the woman saw Anna move, she took a few steps and placed the torch in a torchholder protruding from the wall. As the old nun came closer, Anna saw that the bucket was filled with bubbly water. Without a word the woman put her hand in the bucket, pulled up a scrub brush, grabbed Anna's dirty arm and started scrubbing it. Anna pulled away from the strange situation, but the sinewy strength of the old woman stopped her withdrawal, and the pain in her body made clear that she was in no condition to fight. Sitting still while the old woman systematically scrubbed the dirt of her arm, Anna's mind was in complete chaos. First torture, then a clean-up? Was this a prison or a madhouse? The nun continued to scrub, pulling off the remaining rags of Anna's clothing to get at her shoulders, then back. The old woman was not gentle and the rough brush hurt, yet the scraping pain, removing the encrusted dirt felt cleansing in a near liberating way.

Feeling she needed to change the absurdity of the situation, being scrubbed like a child in a bath, Anna spoke to the priestess. Her throat was parched, but she swallowed and said in a cracked voice.
-I can wash myself, give me the brush and I will do it.
The old woman completely ignored her and kept scrubbing her back, occasionally plunging the brush into the bucket. The old woman then grabbed Anna's arm and hoisted her up on her feet. Afterwards she started on the front, when Anna protested the old woman slapped her across the face with surprising force. Dumbstruck Anna stood back against the stone wall, holding her cheek as the old woman scrubbed her front and continued to ignore any sense of personal space.
The woman finished cleaning as far down as the knees, then took a towel lying across her shoulder and started drying off the wet skin, now quite red from the rough treatment of the scrub. The towel was not more comfortable.

The old woman then emptied the bucket into a small corner pit, took the scrub, bucket and towel, then left. The torch remained on the wall. Anna looked around her prison cell for the first time. It stretched 5 steps in one direction and 8 in the other. In the middle of the room the floor was dirt, but the floor reaching out 1 step from the brick walls was stone. In one corner was a pile of hay, in the other was the small drainage pit. As she was looking around, the door opened again. Once more her heart stopped then raced. The old priestess returned and effectively placed on the floor a wooden pitcher of water, a bowl of corn, rice and bread, and finally a blanket. The door closed again and Anna was alone once more. She hobbled over to the corner where the food was and drank desperately. She did not know for how long she had been imprisoned, but thought she had not been fed for days. She ate and drank most of her food and water, deciding to save a little for later. Taking the blanket she sat down on the hay in the corner and tried to warm herself. She began to memorize the structure of the room. She continued to do so for another hour when the torch suddenly burned out. The room was pitch dark once more.

    • Meanwhilst on a hill outside Baghdah

Field Marshal Volukovich looked outside his tent. A group of his grenadiers were happily sitting around a food pot joking and eating. The morale of his troops was high. They had fought the enemy over the past few days and been victorious again and again. The Arab leadership believed themselves strong enough to dislodge the invading army from the hills outside Baghdad, but they had met with superior Russian training and equipment. Volukovich estimated the enemy deaths to toll around 7.000 in futile attacks. Except for that last one. A group of pikemen had been able to assault his cannon crews as they were repositioning themselves and had cleverly hammered headless nails into the fuse bores during the confusion. Though the cannons were quickly recaptured and the pikemen chased away, the guns had been rendered useless as the nails were firmly stuck. Unexpected and annoying.

The Arabs fought like mad fools. Their medieval troops were no match for Russian skill and supremacy in weaponry, yet they continued to assault his fortified position. Their deaths outnumbered Russian deaths more than 10:1 already, before Volukovich's army had even begun any assault. His 5 Grenadier corps were weary from the massacre, but the jokes about Arabian combat skills cheered them.
-Heaven must be running out of virgins! one man bellowed.
-Especially since we'll make sure there are none here!

The Field Marshal thought about Arabian society. There was immense potential for soldiering here. The Arabs had a strictly genderdivided society. Most men never saw women until the day they were married. Many families set off the costs of marriaging their sons until they were in their mid to late twenties. Young men in Arabia were extremely sexually frustrated. The promise of virgins in heaven caused them to commit collective suicide again and again. If they could be made to fight to live, rather than fight to die, they would be good soldiers. It was simply too easy to kill them, they wanted to die, their leaders wanted them to die, their families wanted them to die. It was madness. They rarely surrendered when surrounded. To the death was their motto. To their death were they dispatched.

Field Marshal Volukovich looked out across the protected bay leading up to the hills. His reinforcements had arrived. Precisely on time. The efficiency of Russian officers was flawless. Another expeditionary force had arrived, more than doubling his troops strength. More would arrive shortly. Did not the Arabs realize that the Russian armies were practically inexhaustible. They counted more men of better training with superior weaponry, and Russia greatly outstripped Arabia in military production output.

With the reinforcements Volukovich considered his position secure and unassailable. More reinforcements would arrive shortly. Yet his orders were clear. Hold the position and wait for the Arabs to surrender to the vastly superior Russian force. He hoped that Saladin would act rationally and leave Arabia, ending the suffering of his people. Yet Volukovich had learned from his short time in these lands that rationality and reason was in short supply here.

Sir, we have landed on Arab soil, shall we proceed with the operation?

          Caliph Mustafa III

It pains me to do so, but yes, proceed.

The Arabs have always been friends of ours but their recent acts cannot go unpunished, I must restore the respect of the Ottomans in other world leaders.

Saladin disobeyed me directly and took our war with Russia as a chance to profit from our misfortune. Even after warning of consequence should they proceed with their illegal settlements, Saladin went ahead.

I cannot afford for world leaders to think that they can blatantly disrespect the Ottoman Empire and for there to be no repercussions.

          • the Lord of Korea sends a missive to the Leader of the NAtives.

            Our old dear friend,

For centuries your people were friends of ours with mutual trading going on. But as the years passed you become more a toy thing of the indians and begun mistrusting us due to the lies they spread.

We put up with your continual ignoring of our pleas to move closer through our Tao ties and rebuild the old freinsdship that we once had at the beginning of time.

Your recent messages t o us spoke of a change in direction, plans to change the way things had been heading.

We had hoped this was a return to the true Tao way, but again we waited for evidence, could the NAtives free themselves of being dictated to be India.

Your recent move of troops to india does show that you are a mere Vassal of India.

This addition of your troops to a war that was already in Indias favour has swung the battle way too far to the favour or one side.

We have held back from doing anything in this war due to the fact it needed to be balanced. You have now swung that round.

We ask that you withdraw your troops to allow the battle to be fought out by the both sides. Your move could truly send this world into a war from which there is no return.

England and Persia are already planning revenge on the Malinese for their support of India in this war, and now you are adding yourself as a target. Do you think it is good for so many Natives to be slain for the aid of the Indians.

            It is your choice.

            • Dear "Friend",

We reached out to you years ago and you responded only with threats. You canceled our open borders for no reason, and have your ships patrolling our borders, and continue to hurl hostile threats and accusations in our direction. The "pleas" I have been ignoring have been hostile threats. If this is how you treat your "friends" we have no interest in being your friend.

Unlike Korea who does seem to slavishly follow England around like a lap dog, the Natives are a strong and independent nation. We owe allegiance to no nation. We have profitable deals with Persia, Russia, India and other nations. We hope to continue trading with all nations.

Korea accuses us of involving ourselves in this war and tipping the scales. However currently the first and second ranked nations are currently at war with the 3rd ranked civ. If that isn't unbalanced already, it seems clear that Byzantium is posed to involve themselves in the conflict. Plus, despite your lies, Korea has been anything but neutral. After England lost control of their oil due to an Indian blockade, they merely switched control of the city to Korea so you could continue supplying them with it. It is obvious to all the world whose side you are on, and obvious to all the world which side has far more nations involved in it. The war is not balanced, and you, Korea, ensures it is not so.

Despite your obviously biased note, we have pulled our troops back. We will however continue to make deals with whichever nation we choose to. We will not be bullied.

                A. This is a troublesome question as whichever way I might phrase it you could claim it as being inflammatory. I will stick with honesty and the historical archives of the Tawantin Suyu period of my people.

Korea was an active member of the ‘Five Nation Alliance’ to attack England and Tawantin Suyu’s keenest supporter in convincing Rome and Arabia to join in the most perilous war in history. When the time for action came the 5th nation dropped out of direct involvement due to its’ tiny size and geographical distance. They still provided Tawantin Suyu with over 100,000 men in aid for which no price was ever asked. Their troops may never have fought under their own colours but they still fought and died alongside our own.

When the time for action came Korea opted out claiming feebleness of military despite being stronger than any but Tawantin Suyu. A Korean seaborne attack was pivotal, even the threat, and the loss of it cost us mightily. Korean ‘inaction’ probably cost the Alliance the war and certainly cost the three remaining huge loss of life as well as wrecking our economies for centuries. You complain of a Galley? Records show that the Korean governments greatest concern was that the vessel be renamed so as to leave Korean hand’s clean!

It would appear that you do not wish a peaceful return to a mutually neutral existence but an excuse for war whilst the world looks elsewhere. • Mr Preisdent,

We dont care if you started your bad mouthing of us publicly before or after closignboreder, as you quite clealry said, we have the right to allow or not allow acces to our waters.

You took this to the world not the other way round.

Secondly all you state about the war is quite correct, but you and the natives are always wrong about one thing. size of nations is nothing when it comes to war. It is size of armies and tech level. During the English war agaisnt the continent we had no attacking units only defenders. One Galley for exploring the world and some fishing boats. You asked us to attack Englands south or even jsut threaten an attack, we told you we had no army to do tihs and you then asked we Loan you our Navy to do the job for you. As we did not have an army we did not want a war with Englanbd so quite clearly asked you to ensure that our vessell was in no way linked to our nation so England would nto decalre war agaisnt us.

So the past is the past, we spent our centuries gorwing richer and stronger and now we are still weel defended , but our navy is stronger much stronger. Only the Indian Battleships are of any concern to us.

So you ask why you should show respect, it is because we can blast your coastal citys to hell and back.

We can easily withhold from attacking the Indians as though they may be evil Taoists, they are still Taoists. But your people whilst beign converted once have never been to a single Taoist festival and also voted against our High priestess.

So we do not need to fear Gods anger in teaching your nation a lesson for disrespect.

We give you two moons to think about this before we decide on what action

                    Chief Minister Endo Gam

As with al lthigns you are great at putting a spin on things. Yes we have made no hidden agenda that we despise the Indians for how htey have corrupted the Tao Faith. We have peqacefully added nations by keeping them in supply of essentials for their existense as in English Oil. This is not hidden buyt openly informed to world.

And again a bad perception is to look at the SCORE rating of size of civs, you have to take into acount the Techs and Army size. By that rating alone India could easily take on the top 4 civs by itself. But the mail joined the Indians and then you sent troops too. This unblacned a game where two armies were fighting one much larger more tech advanced army.

Dont justify your helping them, you did it becaue Natives are the lap dogs of the Evil Taosists and always have been,

Repent of your ways and return to the TRUE TAO WAY.

Peace and prosperity will be yours.

                        • this is a story about Media and Persia

Medians and Persians protest against war!

The stalemate in the west and the ongoing loss of Persian lives had an impact on the national sentiment in both Media and Persia. Especially in New Persia people ceased supporting the war. But also in the large Median cities people were in the streets marching for peace.

At first, when the war was successful, the people were all behind Guru Beli'Az. But now the bodies returned home and no progress had been made for years, support dropped. In Passagarde, Media, Hastogsburg and New Persia City hundreds of thousands people marched in the streets. Especially after the (temporary) fall of New Novograd support for Beli'Az was gone.

The army was ordered to end the protests with all means. Guru Beli'Az could not accept internal conflicts while battling he Indians. The soldiers were ordered to fire at the protesters to end the small scale revolution. At first shots were fired in the air, later shots were aimed at single protesters to scare the others. Then tanks moved in spread dead and horror among the protesters.

Approximately 210 people died in the streets of Media and Passagarde. People ran home in terror and horror. For now the Rule of the Guru was secured, though he was hated by most Persians. As long as the military supported the Guru his position was safe. All the funds going into warfare continued to fuel the military support for Beli'Az.

Hundreds of thousands protest against the war in Media.

                              • Basil was enraged at the news of the fall of Baghdad - seeing clearly what he had known in his heart that the Russia ambassador had been spinning him a web of lies and provarication. The invasion of his neighbour by the armies of Ottoman-Russia (a single entitly with a single foreign policy) - a giant against a child - broke every moral code.

Maybe King Igor thinks Basil is a fool. Maybe he is still smarting because Cleopatra chose him. Maybe he has heard India talk of Byzantine forces in the east and thinks that he can act with impunity.

But perhaps not. Perhaps teh Russian ambassador in Constantinople had been pursuing his own line, keeping King Igor ignorant of the Byzantine position. For over many years Prince, then King Igor, had been a friend and had benefitted much from Byzantine friendship.

Well there was a little time for King Igor to make his position clear.

Basil wrote three letters: the first to the marine commander of the ice sea, the second to the commander of the third armour corps, the third to King Igor, and the Greece and Arabian leadership.
