We need a list of civs available on the world map and when they appear so people can start choosing them...

Also is the default R mod that came with BtS good for MP or will we need to download a new version. Also will we go for the 3000BC or the something AD start?

This MP version of RFC includes automatic losing your cities to new spawning civs.
This means that at a certain moment in time your civ starts to lose ground b/c your cities switch sides.

        Is that something we want?
We may also use the SP version, (the MP version was made b/c of the OOC problems, basicly) in which you can deny a city the right to swap.
Downside is, as far as I can see, that this results in the impossibility to take over later civs. But that can once again not count for pitboss.

Maybe we should just try it.
I haven't made my mind up yet if I want to be in this game. I like the idea of doing something completely different, but time is also limmited.
In that case Toni can take over of course.

I'm also fine with a system in which we have (much) more players then civs. ie. a 10 player poul, and once in a while you will be on the sideline for a while.

Instead of switching every month or every anarchy, we can also agree to switch with every new leader of a nation your storyline installs. (or the dead of the old leader, and then the new player can make up a new leader, maybe following an already in place storyline)
There can be an easy rule on how often a leader must be replaced at most and at least.
What if we play on a high difficulty level with raging barbarians, leaving a few civs AI controled and swap once your civ collapses? The next civ that swaps is taken over by the next player whose turn it is to play.

You would get points for every turn you kept a civ alive, for stories and diplomacy? You can also decide to retire early and will get extra survival points for every turn your succesor survives (50% less than what he earns if your civ is among the top quarter, 75% if its not).

If despite this the civs where too stable the game would naturaly be more competetive and agressive than the normal MP Diplo games where & backstabing is punished 6/7 casses since players will have an incentive to cause civs that are too stable to collapse. Players will try their hand at lots of civs in different roles and different situations. Yesterdays friend will be tommorows Mongol bringing down your ****ty wall

        As to annon:
As to posting, I think the easiest way to create annon accounts would be for players to chose names from a generic diverse in meaning but uniform in form list of ruler titles:

        The General
        The Emperor
        The Oligarch
        ect.

They would also need to title any posts they make and diplomatic letters with the name of the civ they are playing. To avoid confusion they should also change their avatar to represent the civ they are currently playing. When they aren't playing any civ they can choose any avatar except the ones associated with the civs currently in the game.

          Damn Mongrorrians!

I like Hera's ideas on score/survival and Anon.

I'd recommend starting at 3000 BC. Play the full scope of the mod. The early civs would have to promise not to go for their UHV's though, some can be completed early. That'd be no fun!

I think we should also agree not to play any American civs until the New World has been discovered. Not only is it more fun to have everyone together, but survival is much easier for those civs (until the Europeans come at least).

As for technical issues... I posted a thread in the RFC forum asking about Pitboss, sadly no one has responded to it. I guess we just need to try it. It does seem though that we can just reset things to fix any problems we may experience. But yet the read-me didn't seem to address Pitboss at all. We need to do some testing to figure things out.

I think some tweaks have been made to the current version, so I'd suggest using the most recent SP version instead of the one packaged with BTS. I think the MP version isn't updated to the most recent patch... unfortunately.

So lets try the SP version first as a test and see how it goes. Does anyone have any prior experience with hosting a game? If not I'll bring my extra desktop home from the office today and see if I can figure it out (with CS' help).

I'll send you a document snoopy(?) made on pitboss administration.
And I'll test how the SP games work with Pitboss somewhere during this weekend.

Ok, great. I don't know if this is feasible or not, but my plan is to bring home my desktop today and play around with it this weekend. My hope is to set everything up in the living room and control everything on that computer via other computers. I don't have another monitor, mouse and keyboard that I want to set up in the living room. Is that all possible?

                Once it's running, it's possible.
But once in a while you may want to login directly b/c of some problem.

I am also administrating my servers from my laptop.
I just take them over using VNC server/client software, works perfect.
My servers do have a monitor/keyboard/mouse though. (shared with a KVM switch)

If you do have another screen/keyboard/mouse already in the living room you may want to buy a KVM switch. You can then control both pc's with one monitor/keyboard/mouse.
But then you have to invest money of course. You can also plug the monitor/keyboard/mouse in everytime you really have to, and for the normal situations use a remote desktop system.

I think that's what I'll end up doing. Hopefully I won't need to do it too often.

So I lugged my surprisingly heavy desktop computer home from the office today on the metro. It was heavier than expected and it was colder out than expected but I was able to carry it all the way home!

                              Then, good news!

I discovered that I had a mouse sitting around here!
And I found my old Dell keyboard!
And I had forgotten I still have my old CRT monitor!

I plugged everything in, set it up in the living room, hooked the computer directly up to the wireless router. I was ready to go!

Then, for some reason, the computer I lugged through the cold, over a few city blocks, and on the train, and through the metro parking lot, turns out to not quite work. Ah crap.

I turn it on, and I hear it doing something. The fan is spinning, but no light shows up on the front. I can't open the CD drives. Nothing shows up at all on the monitor. Ugh.

I figure I wait for it to warm up and try again tomorrow, but.... ugh, we may be in trouble.

Can I fix my computer? Can I even figure out what is wrong with it? Can I use my laptop to host the game? Can anyone else host this thing? Deity, I vaguely recall you saying you were going to try hosting at some point.

                              Ideas?
