  • Friday Night Civ AAR (11-6-09)

So, I learned a lot of things about MP today, this being my first real MP game in about a year:

-Play the civ that you're given. I was Ghengis Khan - I literally have no experience with an Aggressive civ, but my early game play wasn't bad. I had a pretty good stack with three each of double-upgraded Axes (combat), Spears (combat) and Archers (drill) from my capitol with barracks - I sent them after rah after he so brutally murdered my Scout... his garrison of 12 units, un-upgraded axes and chariots, made me second guess and pillage - I should have gone for broke. It was a complete waste of resources and I barely made a dent in his productivity, he wrecked my stack in the field. Had I held out for siege weapons I probably could have wrecked him with agg/barracks units.

-Don't change techs early on. Make a goal and go for it. I wasted many precious turns re-evaluating my tech choice in the first turns of the game, basically because I wasn't sure what techs I started with. Amateur mistake.

-Don't get stuck in a corner. I was stuck in a corner, failed my early game gambit attack, and ended up with three cities, only one of which was worthwhile after researching Calendar. Expansion is the name of the game, especially with an Imp civ, and I didn't take advantage of cheap settlers early enough. While my capitol had 2 silk and cows, horse and copper were just outside of the cross - could have settled on the cows to been able to work copper MUCH earlier in the game. I settle on the initial spot 99% of the time but I will make my opening move consideration a little more carefully in the future.

Thanks for the game, guys. I'll definitely be back to try my luck soon!

Yes by pillaging instead of attacking I was able to get more troops there to beat you off. You are correct, indecision will always hurt. But we learn every time we play. I'll look forward to seeing you in the future.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple
