Beyond the Pit [Pitboss Diplomacy Game] [OOC Chat Thread]

Although I am certainly guilty of this myself, I think the OOC Chat Thread is becoming a little too open. And by that I mean the in-game topics being discussed. The barbarian issue went from complaints about the amount of barbs (I still think the combination of the size of the map, the amount of civs, and the fact that we are on Epic all contribute to this problem) to an open discussion of tactics towards them. I also think that the barbarian discussion became a charity case, and something I was to benefit from.
Now its hard to parse this issue, for one I fully appreciate everything the Mayans offered me, and I am happy to have neighbors who are interested in a little more than their own territorial aspirations. That said, I thought the fact that the discussion of how to defeat the barbarians became an OOC issue harms the diplomatic aspect of the diplogames. All of this could/should have occured in the story threads. Especially when we have people calling out the "reality" of the game, who simultaneously and openly engage in this wholly unrealistic discussion I think we have a problem.
I am just kind of thinking aloud, and again I am not trying to complain about the support I got against the barbarians, I am just trying to put this into perspective. If your country is overrun by barbarians and you want help, you should ask for it in the story threads. I don't think the chat thread, or the organization thread are proper places for that.
If you are musing about WHY there are so many barbarians that is a different story.
Peace

i dont think any one was actually asking for help in here i certainly wasnt. jsut stating it looked very bad stil ldoes.
for the size of the world there are too many babrbs especialyl for civs likemyself that are distances away from otherds, too much territotry to cover t ostop barbs appearing.
next game please lower the barbs or make the world closer to gether.

Not everything has to be in story-form.
You could write a letter ASKING them to help you with the barbarians, I did that to the Maya and they offered help, it works."Our cause is in the hands of fate. We can not guarantee success. But we can do something better; we can deserve it." -John Adams

The only other time you get help for free of course is when the giving of the help is more to help themsleves.
Its a diplogame, these aren't real-life situations."Our cause is in the hands of fate. We can not guarantee success. But we can do something better; we can deserve it." -John Adams

Jeez Raz, I just called something you said melodramatic and then you top yourself.
I love Diplogames too man, in fact my signature at CivFanatics says "Lord Protector of the Diplogame"
The only MP games I really play are Diplogames, unless I'm bored, sick, or injured. But I also realize that you can't really consider people great friends in diplogames, its part of the package. You've gotta play it diplomatically, and you have to take your virtual people's interests into account. That's all.
And again, most of the time I agree with your positions, but I think the best solution is to try and remove at least one aspect of permenant alliances, and Pinchak said it best; we aren't going to stop them from happening all the time, but we can at least remove part of the draw. And that is what we are doing with the voucher system.
Remember, we have to prevent the game from progressing too fast. After you brought up HOTW II I went back and looked at the website we (well, Drake at least) made for the game (which is still up actually) and I noticed that it was like 1400 ad and we were fighting with tanks and sh*t. I remember how alliances in that game pretty much stayed the same, and the clearly evident drawback of that was the quick technological progression. One session we were fighting with horsemen and two sessions later I was getting shelled by Israel. So I think we've come a long way, I know its a different game (for those who don't know HOTW II was back in the Civ 2 days). But we've come a long way since then, we've artificially changed the victory conditions, we've limited tech trading, we've gone anonymous (even though I don't like that part). So Ozzy is right, we are doing things to make diplogames better, especially for guys like us who aren't the greatest Civ players around.
Even in that game we used a mod, and I am trying my best to make a mod for future games right now (even though I'd like a little more help on it). So, I don't know, I know you want diplogames to be great, but it doesn't mean others don't either. So let's play this out, and everyone is doing their best, I am sure."Our cause is in the hands of fate. We can not guarantee success. But we can do something better; we can deserve it." -John Adams
