  • Can a player re-join as a former AI civ?

I've just started playing multiplayer, and we're all running patch 1.74. One of us had all cities wiped out by the Aztecs, so we tried to save the game, and restart a multiplayer game, but this time have the guy who just lost join in as a different civ, so he could have some cities again.

Unfortunately, as soon as we started up, none of us could do anything. We could move around the map, but none of our units would move, and we couldn't change production in any cities.

We tried reloading, we tried re-saving and reloading, but nothing worked.

Do you think this was just an error, or can't we have someone play as a former AI player?

    Thanks

In theory that should be possible, I'm not sure what happened in your case. Sounds like an OOS ... They should be able to hot-join even (not saving, just exiting and rejoining). Did you have "Takeover AI" as an option (I believe it's default)?

Since the latest BtS patch a MP game can only continue if all civs that were human when the game was being saved had a human controller.

Thus: if one of the players is not available, you can't continue.

You can fix that by just let one player save the game while the others are gone already.
