Yea well there are different types of MP games. I didn't associate the Rah group with the 1 city elimination blazing timer warrior rush crowd. But I've learned.
It's nothing like that, but that doesn't mean you can't have a fairly early rush. Mostly you need to pay attention to who is starting near you, and what sort of space you have; any good player will rush early on if there's not enough space, especially if they're stuck in a corner and the only way to expand is through you.
The difference with the blazing timer warrior crowd is they will aim specifically to rush you every game, while here you only get rushed if your neighbor is relatively squished. In a tight map situation like last night, don't run your warrior far afield

My first foray into the Saturday game last night. Fun stuff. With such a big crowd, I feel very fortunate to have started in relative solitude. Even luckier to have survived to the the end -- 10 hrs later.
I have so much to learn...
Learn to play faster... Being slow to play means you'll be a target for attack, and it also means you annoy people by not playing fast enough. You can't play MP with the micro managing level of SP...
If the timer is running out regularly on you, you are playing too slowly. It can happen sometimes, particularly in a war, but if it's happening more than 20% of turns, you're playing too slow.

I think Ming can attest that my pace of play was actually pretty good (for me) Saturday. I had only two or three turns all night where the timer ran out on me. In fact, I was "waiting for other civs" most of the time. I'm starting to get a lot quicker in the early and mid game, with a lot clearer idea of my tech path and build order.

I just know that towards the end every turn I was waiting on you nearly every turn
It definitely was an improvement over some Friday games, but you still need to work on it to not be an early target for people like me (or even worse, Krill or Dominae ... either of them would build a navy and attacking force to go clear across tho globe to find you if they needed to, with that speed.)

Acknowledged.
Toward the end, I was dealing with unfamiliar areas of the tech tree and build queue. It was also the biggest civ (most cities) I'd ever built in Civ4, and I kept losing control of my economy. Very frustrating. I did the best I could, but obviously that effort was somewhat wanting. But it was a rare opportunity to give the Saturday game a try, and I wanted to give it a shot.
As previously stated, I know I have a lot to learn.
Mea culpa for those timer issues. I appreciate everyone's forebearance in putting up with the noob, and promise improvement in the future.

They weren't great artists. Really I had no chance of succeeding because of RAH's huge army on my doorstep.
You never know, with the turns taking so long and the amount of booze involved at that point, I may have spaced out that you were that close and forgotten to attack.
