    Welcome to The Iliad

This is a Pitboss game for players to give their best possible game.

All aspects will be active including barbarians and diplomacy with the minimum of rules.

A sixteen-hour timer will be employed.

A test server will be available to sort out any connection problems. (see notes 1 & 2)

Players will be advised of the start time 24 hours before the beginning of the game.

CivStats http://www.civstats.com/ will be used for notification of turns.

I acknowledge the advice of several players, especially the game hosts, the oob and Gfletch.

    To join the game

Interested players are invited to join the game by following the instructions below.

    1. Post in this game thread.

    2. PM me your email address.

    Rules

    Absences

Absences for four or more days, six or more consecutive turns, effectively ninety-six hours, should be notified in advance either by PM. It is a players responsibility to check that their communication has been acknowledged; if it has not been acknowledged then the player must rename themselves in the game by adding the letters ABS in capitals to their player name so that there is no possible way it may be missed. Ideally a substitute player should be found but a player may elect to have the AI run their civilization.

    Missed turns

Missed turns for four or more days, six or more consecutive turns, effectively ninety-six hours, without notification will result in immediate replacement of the human player by an AI player and by a new human player as soon as one becomes available. Once replaced by a new human player the original player will not be able to take their civilization back.

    Outages

Notice of planned outages will be posted ahead of time on the game thread. If an attempt to enter the game fails and there is no planned outage wait fifteen minutes and then try again. If further attempts to enter fail check the game thread to see if there is an outage and if there is no notification then advise by PM. Unplanned outages will be notified on the game thread as soon as possible after any player advises that the connection is down. If a reload is needed it will be from the most recent save and a notice will be posted on the game thread.

    Reload requests

If there is a failure to connect due to a problem originating from the server then a reload may be requested. This should only be done if a player thinks that they will miss their turn without a reload. The reload will be from the most recent autosave.

    Grievances

If you have a grievance please advise privately by PM. Give other players the benefit of the doubt and wait to hear their side. In any dispute requiring adjudication a decision will be made in the best interests of the game and will be final.

    Notes

1 The test server will be re-started prior to the beginning of the game.

2 When leaving the game please exit to the Main Menu first and then leave rather than exiting directly.

3 Please ensure that your computer has the capacity to handle a huge game in the modern era.

4 Civilizations will be allocated on a first-come first-serve random basis with three Civilizations held until after 3700 BC. Regular players will note that there are no rules about declarations of war before a certain date or double moves. This is deliberate in order to keep the rules simple and to avoid policing as much as possible. However, in case anyone is unfortunate enough to loose their Civilization before 3700 BC they may have a second chance, as the AI will run three Civilizations until this date. If more than three people have been eliminated the first to be invited back will be the first to have been eliminated and so on. If any Civilizations are unclaimed by 3700 BC they will be allocated to the players on the reserve list on a first-come first-serve basis.

No, the actual game (real game) should start sometime this Saturday. Right now it is just the test game.

Since I am not the host of the game and I noticed that Bolkonsky added you to the line-up, I will PM the IP address and p/w of the test game Pinchak. Please stand by...

              Thanks Wittlich for helping out.

Pinchak, I can see that you have managed to join the test server at least once. Have you been able log on after you posted the message above?

Just to confirm the start time for the "real" game will be 22:00 UTC on Saturday May 19. I will post an email about this in a few hours time.

                The Iliad Game Start Details

Thank you all for your patience. Everyone who has logged on to the test server so far has done so successfully. There were a couple of counting errors when players joined the game but those who made mistakes are were aware of them and I doubt that this will happen again when the game starts. If you count up from the bottom please remember that there are 18 civilizations. A couple of the reserve players still have to try the server out but I do not think that they will have any problems. Hopefully now when we are up and running there will be no issues we will have the minimum of downtime. I am running the server on an uninterruptible power supply, which will cope with all but the most severe of power outages.

For the game a new map will be generated and new random civilizations will be allocated. Please use the number allocated to you, which is the same as in the first post of this thread, as follows:

                Civilizations & Leaders

                Bolkonsky (1)
                the oob (2)

                Wittlich (5)
                CB Droege (6)
                whiplash_CDC (7)
                portuga (8)

                Maydrock (11)
                Toni (12)

                WarningU2 (17)
                GFletch (18)

The game start time will be:

                22:00 UTC/GMT (10:00 PM) on Saturday May 19th.
3:00 PM PDT on Saturday May 19th on the West Coast of North America
6:00 PM EDT on Saturday May 19th on the East Coast of North America
00:00 CEST on Sunday May 20th in Western Europe (France & The Netherlands)
6:00 AM AWST on Sunday May 20th in Western Australia
10:00 AM NZST on Sunday May 20th in New Zealand

Please remember that turns are set at 16 hours.

Once it is up and running I will list the game on CivStats.

The test server will remain up for the time being.

Any questions, please post in the game thread or PM/email me.

After some thought and mindful that this is undesired by some , I er... um... have decided to implement a password.

Two of the three players on the reserve list have not responded to my email inviting then to try out the test server; My best guess is that this is because they may be away at present. I do not want them returning and logging into the game by accident before they should. Hence the password will only be given to the initial fifteen players who start at 4000 BC.

Also, I will email to players the new password together with the list of civilizations randomly allocated to minimise the risk of a someone taking the wrong civilization.

So, the sequence of events will be as follows:

The test server will be taken down at 21:00 UTC, about an hour before the “real” game starts.

The game will start slightly earlier than 22:00 UTC so that I can find out what is the random allocation.

Then list of players with their random allocation will be posted on the game thread.

Then the list and the password for the game will be emailed to all of the initial fifteen players.

                    Hopefully that should minimise problems.

                    Bolkonsky.

Heya... Beta (ToxoXI) had asked me to babysit this for him, but I unfortunately don't know his password. He had thought he would be back by now, but I guess he isn't as he hasn't played any of his turns.

If you want me to jump in a play his turns (which i'm happy to do) please PM me either his password or PM me to tell me you kicked his user from the game so I can join as it.

                        Thanks

                          Beta's password

                          Hi snoopy,

Well, I know the password for the game but I don't know Beta's password for his Civ. Unfortuinately, you will have to ask him for that.

Sorry I just reread your email I will kick him from the game and PM you the game password separately.

                          Bolkonsky.
