  • Questions from a Noob

If some of you pros could part with a bit of info I would appreciate it. I play exclusively mp simultaneous direct IP games, so all questions refer to that gametype.

    A. If two players discover a tech that gives a free GP on the same turn, who get's the GP ???

    B. If two players complete a wonder on the same turn, who get's the wonder?

    C. Do the combat odds take into account the first strike ability?

    D. Do any of you direct connect players use a VOIP program (ventrilo/teamspeak etc.) to chat while you play??

    E. When using "stack attack" how is it decided which unit will attack first?

    Thanx for any help.

I can only answer the first 3 questions:

    A. If two players discover a tech that gives a free GP on the same turn, who get's the GP ???

    - I think the person who has the biggest 'overflow' gets the GP. Ie. player A researched 850/900 beakers for tech Y and researches 60 beakers/turn, player B has 860/900 beaker for tech Y and researches 45 beakers/turn. In the next turn player A has 910/900 beakers and player B has 905/900. Player A gets the GP in this case.

Some are argueing that the person who's first in the turn order gets the GP though.

    B. If two players complete a wonder on the same turn, who get's the wonder?

This works in fact the same as the GP in A. The player with the biggest hammer-overflow would get the wonder.

    C. Do the combat odds take into account the first strike ability?

I think it does since Warlords and it doesn't in Vanilla civ4.

I believe the only difference between 'Stack Attack' and normal attacks are that you don't need to keep repeating the attack command each time you come across a new defender. So if you have a group of units selected, it'll try to use the unit that gives the best advantage (taking damage into account) for each side. Stack attack just means that once that battle is over the next pair of units automatically start fighting until a side wins or all movement points are used up (I think). Without Stack Attack you need to keep ordering the group to attack over and over.

I may be completely wrong, of course, but that is my best interpretation of the situation.

As for VOIP, a couple of us informally use Skype or similar, but a Teamspeak server may reduce the dependance some people place on AIM. Especially since it would reduce the need to alt+tab even further. Also Civ4 supposedly has VOIP capabilities built-in but I don't know how well they work... someone ought to try it at some point.

        Thanx for all the info.

The stack attack thing is still unclear to me though. Let me explain.............

The part about "it'll try to use the unit that gives the best advantage " is what is unclear. If the attacker uses the unit that gives the best advantage then the defenders stack will choose a unit that will reverse that advantage. ie, if my "best" unit is a chariot the damned computer will just yoink a spearman out of the defending stack to wipe it out. Since the defender gets to choose it's best defender to the attacking unit, in many cases the attacker has no attacker that gives a best advantage per se cuz the defending stack will put out the strongest counter unit to whatever the attacker decides to lead off with.
