The Balanced map was made with MP play in mind. You should have a metal and either horses or ivory within 6 squares of your start spot. Its basically a pangaea tweaked for even start areas. The other maps intended for MP play don't always provide that and they are flat maps(Inland Sea, Ring, Hub and Wheel). Lakes is pretty good also, better than pangaea for resource distribution, but some players don't like posibility of threats from just about any quarter from the start.

Other than resources is the land itself ballanced (i.e. similiar access to rivers, coast etc) An does that mean if one person gets a resource (marble, stone) that everyone has access to that or a similiar one.
I've just started a SP game on a balanced map - wasn't sure what it was. Is it always a pangea? I reckon balancing should be an option in the custom game setup rather than a map - that way you can balance resources no matter what the shape of the land. Not sure how that would work programming-wise... would prolly just have to be resources and not hills, rivers, desert etc.
