I'm as glad as anyone that CivIV tries to protect multiplayer from the cheating that you could imagine in MP gaming with a game that is so easy to mod and adjust.
However, am I the only one that is really annoyed by being unable to use very practical and useful mods in multiplayer - mods that don't constitute cheating? I like the mod to see attitudes on the scoreboard, and I love the clock mod that stops the incessant switching back and forth between gametime and real time.
But even if we accept that allowing those would be impossiblefor security reasons, then why the hell can't I at least use graphic mods? What part of a mod like BlueMarble can ever constitute cheating? What part of a low texture mod can ever constitute cheating? My machine can pull off vanilla CivIV more than well, however, any machine that isn't a 3.4GHz monster with dual top-of-the-line gfx cards will begin to stutter on larger maps as the game progresses into the late stages. I'm one of those people that would rather compromise as much as it takes on gfx quality in return for a flawless and smooth playing experience, but I'm prevented from doing that in MP.
At the very least it should be possible to make xml files in such a manner that files dealing with purely graphical settings were seperate from the rest and were not included in the MP cheat protection...
However, it should also be possible to completely disable MP cheating check if you so want. I regularly play with a small group of friends that I trust 110% - noone would ever cheat in this gathering, so why do I have to suffer vanilla CivIV weaknesses in interface and graphics in those games?
If there is a way to get any of those results atm I hope someone will enlighten me, but otherwise what are your thoughts and feelings about this issue?
