  • Direct IP CIV Password Protection...

Okay, I did a search with no luck, so I have to ask:

Is there a way to password protect THE INDIVIDUAL CIVS in a Direct IP game... so that no one can look into the civs from saved games?

Thanks in advance for info on this (sorry if it's a stupid question... it's genetic, I swear!)

I'm a bit confused about this. We use Direct IP all the time and initially I was passwording my civs. But for some reason it won't allow me any more. I was wondering if it's a host setting or a local problem with my install/settings.

Glad to hear it isn't just me (although I've *never* gotten it to work, or even seen a place to *enter* a password).

Hopefully someone else can point us in the right direction...

There is a place to enter it in the Staging Room, where you identify your ruler name, customised civ etc. BUT the password doesn't bloody well enter and it used to... grrrr

Passwords aren't supported in DirectIP games *because* you are not using the GS supported lobby. And there is no way for a player to take your Civ if you drop temporarily, like they can in a GS hosted game. I don't see why this is a issue really. The host of your game has to set up and invite the all players in the first place so that alone gives you the control you need. If you are worried about people looking at your Civ then perhaps you are playing with the wrong crowd :-/

I play with friends, so I'm not really worried about... we were just curious as to how to do it.

We play over multiple sessions (don't necessarily finish in one night) so everyone has a copy of the game.

But I do see a need for it in some cases for DirectIP, and I don't quite understand why they wouldn't support it.

Oh well... I guess I don't *have* to understand

Passwords should work for Direct IP - it's not just a matter of trusting your group (which I always do); it's a matter of principle and rock solid security.

If someone wants to see you civ or play your game they must ask you for the password. This is basic. Don't confuse trust with security.

One of the main things we asked for from Civ2 days was uncrackable passwords. It is inevitable that you will get into a game with a cheat at some point. It's happened to all of us at some time.

I want workable Direct IP passwords.

Isnt there a way around this as with the scenario feature in civ2?

Eyes is gone though. He was too ashamed of the ass kicking I gave him (twice) he had to retreat back to AoE.

At least Eyes is a self-confessed cheat.

Wouldn't you be happier knowing that people like him can't cheat. There are bound to be cheats out there and you've played at least one of them...
