  • The History of the World...

I'm trying to start up a diplogame on Friday nights (USA) at any time.

I'm picturing a world map with 7-9 tribes, we can either randomize or create specific resources.

I'd like to make sure everyone's game runs smoothly before we start to make sure there aren't any problems. Prospective players should understand that a game like this will be played once a week for about 4 hours (maybe more, maybe less) and the duration could be anywhere from eight months to a year depending on how fast the game moves along.

We don't have to play every week, obviously some issues will come up in a game covering such a long period of time so don't worry about that, the idea is to have fun and not necessarily the speed of the game.

For those of you who aren't sure what a diplogame is I'll give a small little explaination; its basically a game where conquest victory is not encouraged, the idea is to play in an epic game that is described and recorded through posts that can either be letters, newspapers, actual interactions between "characters" that live in your nation, and treaties and agreements. Players will discuss what is going on in the game on the forums and also use the forums to conduct diplomacy outside of the game. Generally speaking the entire Apolyton community will witness the game through our storylines and communications.

The idea in this game is to comport yourself as a true leader would, and to role-play different leaders/attitudes your civilization may encounter during its time on the planet.

In my mind this is what Civilization was meant to be, and I think if you give it a shot you'll find it fun and it may give you a different perspective on playing Civ altogether.

If anyone is interested or has any questions please respond here, thank you.

    Peace.

    Good post Capo.

Nice to see diplogames explained in that concise and excellent way.

Grab it for the Diplo thread ozzy! And how about a Civ 4 sticky for that thread?

I'll probably be good for this one Capo, if you'll have me...

I just sent out like 20 PMs to various folks, so hopefully we'll get a bunch of takers. See the other thread for everyone to declare which game they want in on. Deity, can you play both? Let us know.

Well it doesn't look like the turnout is going to be good for this game right now, only Ozzy and Deity have posted here (which is a little disheartening considering they're going to play in the Saturday-Night game and not this one), so if there is nobody out there we might as well consider this one failed too.

        Peace.

For the love of God, can you ****ing chill out for once?

          A. Neither Deity or I said we were playing in the Saturday game and not this one.

          B. We already have a thread up and running that many people are posting in, just because they didn't all start posting in a second thread doesn't mean you should get pouty and write off the Friday game.

          C. You posted this thread less than 2 days ago, have a little patience.

          D. Just because someone doesn't post in this thread doesn't mean they aren't interested/able in playing in the Friday night game. If you take a moment to breathe and read you'll see that I have a good list going in the other thread with people's availabilities for both days.

          E. What you should do is follow my lead by recruiting more players, not throwing fits and jumping to conclusions.

Deity's already playing in a game that occurs in Australia on Saturday afternoons, which means he is NOT playing in this game, and you've already said you are playing Saturday night games. So yes, you did say that already.

And I didn't throw any fits.

I just confirmed, in the other thread, that I'm playing Friday. Show me where I said I was playing on Saturday. Maybe back before there even was a Friday game, back before you said you couldn't play on Saturday. But since then I haven't committed until just now.

Ok, since we are decided on two games, lets divide up the discussion to avoid confusion. Lets keep this thread for out of character discussion for the Friday night game.

The patch is out. Can we start this week?

Time to pick your civs! And do it quick, please, since I need to customize the map.

                Friday Night US/Saturday Afternoon Australia:
The Capo - Roman Empire (Caesar)
                OzzyKP - India (Gandhi)
                Deity - ?
                Master Mike - Japan (Tokugawa)
                Seventy7 - Mongols (Genghis)
                Deity Dude - ?

Put me down for Mongolia....I thought they were taken all along or I would have chosen them from the beginning.

I also think that since this is my 1st time playing a Dip Game, I should just stick with the US night, and maybe go to the saturday game later. That way I get a better understanding as to what is going on.

I read the FAQ, but a lot of questions get answered throughout actual play.

Heh, you just aren't getting it. Lemme give it to you straight. If we put civs right next to each other the game won't be any fun. So we have to space them out enough to give everyone a decent bit of land. You do know we are playing a World Map, right?

                    Here are your options:
                    Russia
                    Mongolia
                    China/Japan
                    Mali

                    Pick one.

                      Hey!

Ozzy, I noticed you listed China and Japan in this thread? Does that mean we are using my idea for two settlers? If not, how are we going to get over Japan's disadvantage as far as land accessibility goes?

No. If someone wanted to play Japan, they'd just have to build boats, heh.

In HOTW4 I played as England on a map that had room for only one or two cities on my home island. Japan on this map has room for 3 or 4. So if someone wants to take it on, they will just have to deal with it.

Perhaps one of these games I'll try Japan.

Ok, we need to also exchange our AIM/ICQ/Yahoo contact info. Here is my running tally:

                          Ozzy - AIM(LazerkP) ICQ(47270249)
                          Capo - AIM(LBPBumout)
                          Deity - ICQ(8388924)
                          Deity Dude - AIM(Deity Dude) ICQ(157329419)
                          Master Mike - ICQ(69571255)
                          Seventy7 - AIM(Civ4Seventy7Ways)

Also I HIGHLY recomend that everyone installs the patch and runs a few test games NOW and doesn't wait until we are ready to play. At 8 PM EST Friday night I want to get started, not troubleshoot for 2 hours. So get all that taken care of ASAP. And of course pick a civ and confirm that you will make it tomorrow.

                          chop, chop.

I will take Japan, yes i can make the time for the friday night game. 8pm US EST is 12pm here on Saturday.

Also in regards to the patch, after i updated my game became unplayable, even though i have a P4 3.4 with 2gig of ram. No CTD's or move glitches, it was just the whole game ran very slow, were i could barely move a unit, barely playable in SP and totaly unplayable in MP until.

                            I found this http://www.tweakxp.com/article37033.aspx

which is also refered to in this thread on civfantics http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=142549

The performance increase i got was astounding, well when units barely moved after updating to a patch that was supposed to improve things. I can only imagaine how it would improve performance on lower end machines and help make game play smoother and more rewarding. I have tested this in SP and MP.
I highly recommend you try it, its a simple little file.

For some reason the patch forces CIV IV way down the list on my CPU proccesors tasks with XP. Which made gameplay unplayable this fixes that.

                            Hope this helps.

I forgot, Deity should be able to play as our aussie game dosnt start until 7-8pm Australian EST so that gives us 7-8 hours to play the diplo game which would mean 3-4am for you guys. Im sure thats more then enough time for 1 session.
