I've never played Civ in multiplayer, but now that I'm married to a Civ fanatic, we're going to try it out. We started a game last night, and I couldn't figure out how to make us part of the same "team". She couldn't see any of my strategy layer changes, nor could she see the map pings that I did. What am I missing?

When you start a game, there's a number just to the right of player name, and before civ choice.
That's your team number. Set it to the same digit to have a team together, and set your opponents (or AIs) to another, identical digit to have them teamed up as well. -
