  • Splinters of the Union

The following is an original work of fiction. All characters and events are fictional. This is a scenario I dreamed up, there is more to it, which I will post later after more is completed.

    Prologue

After the democrat party usurped all power to their party alone, eliminating the opposition parties, they began to render the Constitution obsolete by claiming rights were making the country open to terrorist threats. Almost instantly States called their National Guard units to duty and seceded from the Union and the corrupt Democrat D.C. government. Quickly the government called the Army and Marines to try and suppress the secession, declaring a national martial law, death by firing squad for any secessionist, and strict interstate movement policies. This caused mass riots, and in turn only turning more governors; Republicans, Independents, and even some Democrats, to secede as well. The President tried desperately to control the country, ordering the Nation Guard units to obey his orders and detain the rebelling governors.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff had an emergency meeting in secret to decide their best course of action. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs ordered the chiefs of staff to obey the President’s orders, only the Navy and Marine’s complied with the orders. The Army and Air Force denounced the President; General Sykes-Willis of the Army went as far as to order his commanders to attempt to remove the President and his cabinet, and render the senate under military control. Quickly this coup-de-tat failed and Sykes-Willis had to evacuate with his troops to safe lands, Texas. Most of the Army and Air Force, after the failed coup, rendered their troops under the orders of the Governor’s of the land’s in which they currently resided. Marines and Navy vowed loyalty to the government in D.C. with all units in the Pacific or west of the Mississippi turning to guerrilla tactics and insurgency. An outright shooting war had not started, but it was only a matter of time.

    January 18th, 2013 4:23PM local time, Washington D.C.
America was in an uproar as the President declared he would not step down from office, even though the loss of the election said he must. A majority senate vote and Supreme Court vote declared the President office for life.

    4:37PM

All communications nationwide began to broadcast a message. No audio, just an aerial view of D.C. with a caption on the bottom of the shot, “President for life, such a short term. Long Live the People. Long Live the Constitution.”

    4:39PM

A nuclear explosion completely devastates Washington D.C. instantly killing the majority of the democrat government.

Almost instantly the new borders were drawn. The Reformed United States of America came under control of the President-elect Bennit in Sacramento California. The Federated States of America was already under the thumb of the radical religious governor Johnston of Minnesota. The southern states and Texas had an agreement before the explosion when they were ready to secede, Atlanta became the capital of the Confederate States under Governor Mayweather, and Austin became the capital of the Independent Republic of Texas under Governor Dean.

The initial speculation about the explosion was terrorists, and then it shifted from Islamic terrorist groups to possibly domestic terrorists. Again it shifted to the Army renegade chief of staff General Sykes-Willis, now in hiding, to make up for the failed coup-de-tat. Several weeks after the explosion the new conspiracy theory arose when a news broadcast declared the Vice-President was alive and now in control of the USA. He had crawled from the rubble of D.C. alive and with little radiation poisoning, and with the new idea that he was the cause of the explosion to take control of America after the declaration of president for life, a policy that carried over to him. With the acting USA government now based in Philadelphia and the vice-president now in control the entire continent was in jeopardy of war.

The United States is a fractured and splinter governments have sprouted up dividing the territorial boundaries. Many former Governors are calling themselves President of their own versions of America. In the New England states the old government holds the title of The United States of America. The southern states, paying homage to their heritage and history, became the Confederate States of America. In the Midwest came the Federated States of America, based out of St. Paul Minnesota, form a federation of strict religious government. To the west is what is called the Reformed United States of America, though they are formed on a single party, democratic socialist republic, there is little that is different from the former national government based in D.C. Texas became an Independent Republic, as they were the first to cry out for secession before the collapse, and one of the few states to not cling to the United States persona. The other states being Vermont and Maine, which seceded from the USA shortly after the collapse, they are now under guard by UN troops all along the borders. Michigan also fractured, West Michigan was held by Federation troops, while East Michigan was held by Federal troops.

Civil war skirmishes have blanketed the entire landscape, some over things such as food or supplies, with others going into outright bitter grudge matches of political rivalry. Texas has stayed out of the offensive movements, choosing instead to defend its borders from Mexican, and American, illegal immigrants. The RUSA and the USA are constantly fighting with the FSA, both trying to restore order to an otherwise anarchy covered land. The FSA has a two front war with the RUSA on the west and the USA coming from the east, but a cease fire with the CSA and a neutral stance with Texas that allows goods to be traded and keep the economy alive. The CSA struggles to stay out of USA control, with the latter’s government still claiming to control the southern states.

Battle lines have been drawn, it has only been 6 months since the devastation of D.C. and the countries that came from the USA are ready to eliminate each other to bring the land into their rule. Riots in Boston, Chicago, New York City, Miami, Dallas, and Los Angeles are trying to be put down by UN troops and segments of the old Federal Emergency Management Agency. Most FEMA personnel swore allegiance to their respective governors after the attacks, and were restructured as crowd control, water and food supply, and communications restoration. The UN troops are receiving the most of the riots, citizens believing the UN to be a foreign power trying to take complete control of the segmented States. Fingers are being pointed everywhere at whose fault things were, who blew up D.C., and who caused this chaos.

Little did they know it was not a government conspiracy, or a revenge plot from a failed military coup, it wasn’t domestic terrorists or even fanatic foreign terrorists for that matter. It was just me. I had my reasons for why I blew up D.C. and split America into several new countries. I am not a politician, and I didn’t do it for power. I had my reasons. Now I am here, alone, trapped in the USA, and with entire nations trying to figure out my motives and who I am.

    General Sykes-Willis

This is original work, all characters and events are fictional. Use of this material is not authorized.

The sun slid low over the horizon as night fall crept in. The mix of night and day looked more beautiful than anything else in the ugly world that has come from today. General Alexander Sykes-Willis, the now renegade former US Army chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, looked out over the Texas ranch where he was in hiding. The vast fields surrounding the ranch were almost untouched by civilization. Only one long winding road leads to the ranch house in the center of the ranch, about a quarter mile from the state road and five miles from the nearest town. He had been hiding on the ranch for several weeks, ever since the failed coup-de-tat in late December 2012.

Most of his staff residing on the ranch with him was from Fort Hood and Headquarters III Corps, the 1st Cavalry Division, 4th Infantry Division, as well as the subsequent support units. The Fort Hood commander, Lieutenant General Davis, vowed their loyalty to General Sykes-Willis and the Texas governor Wallace Dean, with Fort Bliss still unsure of who to follow. Though most of the Army in Texas was on lock down to their bases due to the coup, there was a large Marine presence in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin to ensure Texas would not continue its push for secession.

Sykes took a long puff from his cigar, looked skyward towards the stars, and let out a loud sigh. Smoke billowed from his lips, “it is going to be one hell of a new year.”

“Ain’t that the damned truth,” a voice came from behind him. A thick Texas accent, adorned in the full cowboy garb, Owen Burr the owner of the ranch and former Special Forces Colonel. “You know Al, if you would have told me you was gonna go and hold yourself a coup-de-tat, well I would have grabbed front row seats.” Burr let out a low chuckle as he took a seat on the hill next to Sykes.

“Owen, it was something I had to do. You haven’t had to deal with being torn between your oath and your President,” Sykes looked over at his old friend, inhaling another puff from his cigar, “I had no choice.”

“Listen Al, we had to do something’s before that we weren’t proud of, but we had to do them. This time, well I am on your side. Otherwise I would kick your ass to the curb, same as those dip **** officers you got gaggling around in my house. Which by the way, why are they here?” Owen looked at his friend inquisitively, as if he already knew the answer to the question he had just asked.

Sykes just looked harder at his friend with an emotionless glare, and then turned his stare back towards the almost completely set sun. He dropped his cigar to the ground, hoping off the fence he had been sitting on, smothering it into the ground.

“You know why,” he said as he turned to walk back towards the house.

“I know why,” Owen said, more to himself than to his friend, “yea, I know why.”

      El Republica Del Norte

Along the Arizona border the situation has become hectic. The border patrol has continued its job of ensuring illegal immigrants do not cross onto US soil, but now with the recent collapse of order illegal’s are crossing under watch of armed guards from the local cartels. Border Patrol captain Enrique

Fernandez sat patiently in his white and green patrol SUV waiting for a return radio call from his headquarters. He reach over to his side to make sure a magazine was secure in his M-4 carbine. In the passenger seat sat his partner, Sergeant Omar Brady.

“You know, I am not entirely sure we even need to be here anymore. I mean, with no government really in control what laws are regulating the border?” Omar mentioned while watching the horizon for movement.

“As I told you before, we are in the state of Arizona and Arizona still has a government. We listen to the governor until a new president is put into office,” Enrique almost choked on his last words. He was a skeptic of the government for several years, ever since he was released from active duty in the Army in 2008. Saying “put into office” made him feel like he was ok with a corrupt totalitarian regime.

“I know, but really, is the country broken up or what?” Omar asked, glancing over at his partner.

Enrique didn’t want to admit the country was broken, but at the same time he hoped it was. “With the entire government gone since D.C. exploded we fall under the governor’s control in the state in which we reside. Remember Omar, the country is made of states that are all sovereign. And the national government was made by the people for the people,” he said taking a sip of water from a bottle, “it doesn’t matter if the national government falls. We still have state government which is a lot like small countries.”

There had always been skeptical conspiracy theories about the illegal Mexican immigrants wanting to retake the south western states to invent their own republic. They call it El Republica Del Norte in Spanish, which means the Republic of the North. Enrique had heard some of his relatives talk about it before, they would go on and on about how America stole Arizona, New Mexico, California, Texas, and parts of California from Mexico and that someday the people would take it back. He always saw it as dream speak, or conspiracy talk, but now as he looked out across the border at all the masses of immigrants rushing for the border he began to think differently.

“Get me headquarters on the line,” Enrique said to Omar, who just handed him the radio handset. Enrique rolled his eyes, taking the radio and dialing in the BP headquarters in Tucson. He was able to get through to the dispatch on the line.

“HQ this is BP 74, I need command on the line ASAP,” he said into the radio.

“BP 74 this is dispatch, command occupied. What do you need,” was replied back.

“Dispatch, BP 74. We need orders for blockading the border immediately. Initial reports of cartels and Mexican Army overseeing illegal movement misinterpreted.”

“BP 74, dispatch. Say again? Misinterpreted how?”

Enrique cleared his throat, “Dispatch, it is my belief an invasion is under way.” Omar looked over at his partner in disbelief, about to protest, but was silenced by Enrique waving a hand at him. Omar redirected his attention back to the border. “Dispatch, 74. Mexican Army and Cartels on the border with massive movement to move across the border signifies something bigger. Redirect to command immediately.”

A few minutes of silence went over the radio. It was obvious to Enrique that several other patrols had been listening to him, as more trucks could be seen moving around on the US side of the border. And even more obvious was that the Mexicans had been listening, as a Mexican Army truck had could be seen moving quickly on the horizon towards the highway. Enrique started the trucks engine, pulling off his post and hurried towards the border check point.

“Omar, lock and load. We are going to have trouble real quick,” he said as he slammed the pedal to the floor. Speeding across the rough terrain of the desert towards the border, he feared the illegal movements would quick turn into an invasion of US soil.

“BP 74 this is command, what is your position,” a familiar voice of the deputy governor of Arizona came over the radio.

“Command, I am two miles from the border entry. I emphasize that something is going on here, request immediate National Guard assistance down here,” he didn’t slow down as he hit a paved road that lead to the border check point on interstate 15 in Nogales.

“BP 74, nothing is out of the ordinary on our end. We have no reason to believe they have hostile intent,” replied the deputy governor.

“With all due respect sir, I know what is happening here. They are going to move on us, we need Nation Guard support and air support from Davis-Monthan. I don’t know what they are doing, but there is way too much Army presence, not stopping the illegal movement, to be nothing.”
The border patrol truck was on the outskirts of Nogales when an explosion was seen coming from the city center, then another explosion on the other side of town, smoke billowing into the sky.

“HQ BP 74, Nogales under attack, repeat under attack. Two explosions inside city limits, unknown origin,” Enrique screamed into the radio. “Omar set frequency to all units.” Omar changed the radio frequency, “All units, Nogales under attack. Stand your ground; no one is to cross that border. I authorize the use of deadly force.”

“Eric, man you can’t do that. You can get fired for that,” Omar said to his partner, knowing well and good that the order of deadly force can’t be given by a captain. Enrique slammed on the breaks of the truck, reset the frequency to command, then opened his door and stood on the edge to get a better look at Nogales.

“Command BP 74. I authorize my units to use deadly force to ensure no crossing of the border. I say again, my units have full authority to defend the border. We are under attack whether you like it or not. BP 74 out.”

All events and characters are fictitious and original.

It was a cold morning for Texas, but it didn’t bother General Alexander Sykes-Willis who was wearing his ACU attire with gortex jacket. He was all but alone in the middle of north eastern Texas, save for his friend Owen Burr hiding far away in camouflage with a rifle, waiting for the Texas governor’s envoy. The governor had made a proposition to the general to become his highest military official, General of the Armies of Texas, after the governor ordered the states secession from the Union.

The end of January saw a lot of death and a lot of change. With Washington D.C. wiped off the map by a nuke, from an unknown origin, the entire country has fallen into disarray. Governor Dean had already been on the side of secession since the days of martial law under the, now dead, former president. The people of Texas had had as much of the president and his oppressive government as they could take, before the martial law took place Texas was a hot bed for the secession movement. After the martial law few people were willing to even say the word.

Now though, things had changed. Someone from somewhere had eliminated the threat the president posed on keeping every sovereign state in the Union. Now was the time for the states to reclaim their sovereign right to self rule. Texas just needed someone to support the government, someone who could rally the troops still residing in Texas to protect its borders and the republic it would once again form. That person was the now fugitive former Army chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Alexander Sykes-Willis.

He looked off into the distance; a dust trail from the dirt road billowing into the wind, a truck was approaching. The General recognized the license plates as the truck got closer, office of the governor, the envoy had arrived.

As the truck pulled to a stop, the General could see a black beret in the driver’s seat, meaning the envoy was military. When the door opened a talk dark skinned man stepped out, he was wearing his dress uniform with his pants tucked into airborne jump boots. The General saw his rank and name plate, Lieutenant Colonel Dust.

“General Sykes-Willis?” the Colonel asked, knowing well who was standing in front of him. He rendered a salute, which the General casually returned.

“Colonel Dust, how is the weather in Cleveland?” the General replied in the agreed upon code phrase.

“Cleveland doesn’t matter, it’s all about Texas,” replied the Colonel with the confirmation code phrase. “General, I am here by order of the governor of Texas to request your acceptance of command. Can I assure the governor of your loyalty?”

“You can assure the governor I will command his troops, those troops wishing to leave Texas will be able to do so without repercussion,” the General said, reaching into his inner jacket pocket to retrieve a cigar. After lighting it he continued, “I swear loyalty to the people, be them American from any state or be them Texan. I am loyal to the Constitution and the governor as long as he abides by it.”

“I suppose I should inform you then that upon the time when Texas is declared a free republic that the governor’s first order of business is to ratify the Constitution as it was written by the founding fathers,” the Colonel said handing a dossier to the General.

“This is a list containing all military elements residing in Texas borders that have sworn to protect Texas in the possible coming war.”

“So the secession is a sure thing then, well at least he went as far as to make sure the troops were with him before just making them his,” the General said opening the dossier to read the list. He frowned when he noticed a missing Army base. “What about Bliss?”

Fort Bliss was missing from the list of loyal military bases in Texas. Fort Bliss was located near El Paso, Texas near the New Mexico border. It was a valuable resource for Texas’ future army. Sykes-Willis was very unhappy to see the post commander had not agreed to heed the governor’s command.

“That would be your first order of business, General. The commander currently is a Major General Collinwood,” said the Colonel after reading a list he presented from a notebook he had in his pocket.

“I know General Collinwood, and I do not think he would be willing to fall under Texas control. He is from New York, most likely he still holds his allegiance to the federal government, no matter what form it takes,” he said to the Colonel, already knowing what he would have to do to ensure Bliss was a Texas asset. “Colonel, what is your position right now?”

“Well at the moment I am the envoy between the governor and the military,” he said with a little pride.

“Good enough, your also my adjutant to the governor. I am not going to be able to go back and forth between troops and his office, so you will be my communications with him. Understood?”

The colonel nodded, rendering a salute to the General who was turning to walk away. Colonel Dust began to protest the General from leaving, when the General turned and interrupted him.

“And Colonel, get me the commanders from Hood. Give the highest commander this GPS,” he said tossing a car’s GPS unit to him, “tell them to meet me there in 24 hours exactly.” A moment later the General was out of view of Colonel Dust, who was getting back into his truck to return to the governor.

Owen Burr had been watching the entire meeting to make sure no one was going to attempt to take out his friend. Through listening equipment he could over hear what the conversation between the General and the envoy was about, so he already knew what the General was going to do when he arrived at the rendezvous point ten minutes after the meeting ended.

Burr had already started thinking of ways to help his friend, and he decided on the first step rather quickly. As the General walked towards Burr, who was sitting with his back against a tree having a smoke, he beamed a smile towards him.

“Well General, sir, I do believe you are in need of some assistance here. Someone with special skills, the types of skills that few people in Texas have,” Burr said with a chuckle. “So I guess, old buddy, you had better swear me in.”

The General smiled slightly, realizing his friend was with him in this ordeal. He tossed him the dossier, “We have elements at Fort Hood behind us for sure. We have the medical assets at Sam Houston as well as some of their support units which have moved to Fort Hood. Six out of the seven Air Force bases, with Sheppard Air Force base staying loyal to the Feds. The NAS JRB Fort Worth is going to be a problem, and then all those Marines in the cities as well.”

“I can see why. You said before that the Marines and Navy are staying loyal to the Feds, but what about the Air Guard stationed there?” Burr asked.

“The Air Guard is loyal to Texas, the Navy personnel have already started evacuating but the Marines are staying behind. They are an artillery unit, but they are still Marines.”

Burr looked up from the dossier, “so what is the plan sir?”

“Well, I hate to say it old friend, but we have a fight on our hands.”

Why Oerdin I didn't realize you read. I always figured you just made assumptions...oh wait you did make an assumption.

Every right winger's dream is for the country they love to collapse into civil war? Way off. This is more of my own post apocalyptic version of America. I have been an avid reader of post apocalyptic stories and how they usually have Americans resorting to barbarism rather than trying to maintain civility or the Constitution, which further into the story you come to see that the freedom and America are the prime plot. Not just the death of Dems or the rise of socialist state, those are just devices. People coming together to fight for what they believe in, to stand together as a nation, be it one nation or be it many forms of one nation, Americans are prone to standing for what they believe in and that is the idea behind this. Don't make assumptions to incomplete works. I haven't posted more because noone seems interested.

                Hog Wash.

I'm to the right of most Republicans, and my dream is for America is to keep being united and free.

My beef with Obama is not that he's black. I couldn't care less. My concern is that he's very near to being a socialist, and I don't like that.

edit: But if the US DID descend into another Civil War (which I doubt), as a New Mexican, I'd fear an independant Texas. I forsee a water war in that situation. New Mexico can't afford to keep sending water to Texas, and Texas can't afford for us to stop.

This is true. And of course I hope for America to last 1000 years (just to spite Hitler). What I wrote is a work of fiction and nothing more, written with just imagination and a personal favor towards post apoc type stories.

Politics in America is like a pinball machine with two exit chutes: no matter how much the ball bounces around, it aint going nowhere except one of two dark holes lol. Both the left and the right can suck it, together they're ruining the country and claiming the other did it.
Cool story, but realistically I don't think the US will ever split again like in the Civil War. TV has basically made us all the same everywhere. Scary thought actually lol
