I thought I would put in a few words regarding my first experience with multiplayer CIV.
I had a few problems with my security software not being configured to allow connectivity but once I set it up connections were not a problem.
Having friends who new about a game would have helped in getting one going quicker as it takes a while for people to join and accept settings.
My first experience was on a stard size map with 3 verses 3 player. We only played for a couple of hours. I found it to be slightly in tense as you have to play your turn within a small amount of time (20 seconds per turn incrementing as unit counts increase). I was new at it so add in stress factor. But I must admit it was far more interesting having a living breating set of opponents. That coupled with the team play (shared or multiple science research and shared technology) made for a very interesting play indeed!
I recommend giving it a try!
