Just the fact that so many people are so quick to zealously defend the game is a testament to how well the game is designed and its mass appeal.

The way I see it, it's his loss.

GeForce 3? Rofl, how about you shell out $75 and join us in 2005, eh buddy?

oh yeah, wahh I never read the manual, wahh I built so many cities I went bankrupt, wahh I don't read any descriptions of anything.

      Want a rattle, baby?
Responses like this are unnecessary and downright rude. The thread starter is giving his opinion on faults he dislikes about the game and even if you disagree, that is no reason to behave like this.

To be fair, on the internet you can find large numbers of people to support anything no matter how bad it is. I happen to think Civ 4 isn't bad, but just because a lot of people say it is good (especially on a fan site), doesn't necessarily mean that it is.

            Hey, I got a PC that's still using a VooDoo3!

            THAT'S antique.

Edit: I didn't see the VooDoo1 Comment until later.

I still have one of those Trident ISA cards somewhere. I think it has like an MB of DRAM.

              • If you think *any* 3D video card is "antique" then you can't be more than around 15 years old.

In my day, we could only have 4 colors at a time, they were all ugly, and if you wanted different colors you had to switch the entire palette to four completely different colors which were also ugly, and that's the way we liked it!

I still have mine sitting on a shelf. Do you think it would run Civ4? That would just be brutal.

I had a Diamond Viper years ago, and never got it to work with anything, despite spending forever re-installing NVIDIA drivers. I threw it away, got a Voodoo, and have never bought an NVIDIA card since.

                    SMAC
I'm sure it was a great game, once you got the hang of the Unit Workshop, but I never played it enough to get to grips with it properly (often a reason for people not liking a game), and the graphics didn't do it for me either. Mainly though, I didn't go for the space theme so played CTP instead at the time. If I ever get sick of Civ 4 (unlikely, I suspect) then I should revisit SMAC. I liked the factions and the borders (I hated the Civ 1/2 lack of borders.)

                    OP
Whilst people are entitled to their 'opinions', others are also entitled to shoot them down for talking crap after playing once without reading the manual. Unfortunately most of the complaints were "OMFG my Civ 2 playstyle doesn't work so this game sucks!!"

                    • OK back on topic.

I am NOT disappointed. I am glad that ICS and micromanagement is over. I could micro to an extent but it took away the fun of the game for me.

And maybe its just the newness of the game, but I see myself playing the same save over and over again trying out new strategies to see if they work or not. My first impression is that this game is "deeper" strategy wise than its predecessor's.

                      Time will tell, I guess

Oh, don't get me wrong. I used to program a PET (when I was in school mind you, I'm not THAT old) so I remember when there was no color.

I was mearly keeping it in context. If you want a true example of antique my wife found (and threw away) all my original Amiga manuals and the Workbench floppy from my A500.

That does technically qualify as an antique (older than 25 years).

It certainly doesn't work. I keep getting crushed, even on Noble. The AI seems to be able to produce way more units than I can, and without ICS I can't keep up. I'm not complaining, I'm glad it's not as simple as before.

I've adjusted to no ICS on Noble straight off, i've had one game where I was in the top half of the midfield and in the second game i'm streaking off into the distance (although a lot of the second games success is down to my wonderful Praetorians...)

                              • I thought I would drop in and say how disappointed I was in Civ 4. While on the face of it it has depth in some areas, the game never flowed really well for me and I had major technical issues already covered in 500+ threads in another part of the forum.

I thought the graphics were bland, 3d was a big mistake. If I played in the normal view, about 12X8 tiles, It was very hard to see who a unit belonged to as the colour of the flag nearly disappeared and virtually no chance of telling if there were multiple units in a tile. Menus were very basic and simple ommissions like not being able to access the diplomacy screens from the diplomacy advisor. The units menu simply showed how many of each type, whereas in AOM it goes a step further and allows you to track individual units and move them with the menu still open.

Different tile improvements for different goods got tedious after a while as well as those workers again. Once I had 6-8 it became a pain, I captured a few and every turn rather than leave them idle I spammed out tile improvements. Totally unrealistic and childish system IMHO. Much prefer the CTP2/AOM system, one tile improvement for goods and every tile improvement costs something, rather than some 4000 yr old worker churns it out for free.

Many wrong messages, and a few noticeable bugs. Over 3 games I had at least 3 occurrances where I disbanded a cleric in a foreign city and nothing happened, no message to say it was successful or not. I also had 9+ occurances where I disbanded a great person and did not get my advance.

But my biggest complaint is the AI, usuall Civ style over the top cheats which XXXX you off no end (e.g., I was biggest in a game, 5 techs ahead of any other ai at 0AD, by 500AD, all but one had caught up). The only thing that caused concern was the AI attack out of the blue after 500AD when the map is full and they are on your borders. Apart from that, it was a cake walk.

In my last game, Monarch level, great plains, playing as Louisxiv, I was nearly 3 times the next ai score when the game crashed and died around 1800 AD. I killed the ai one after the other with relative ease, as soon as I built a couple of buildings in a city I had no problems finance wise. AI counterattacks were pretty poor, often I would use a captured worker as a decoy and a valuable unit like a knight would go to great lengths to leave cover and kill it. Killed several stacks of unescorted catapults. The unit promotion system while interesting, actually made it much easier to take cities.

Bug ridden, booooring, bland botch up IMHO Civ 4. Hear of the saying, a camel is a racehorse designed by a committee, this committee was so big it produced a jackass.
