  • Random thoughts and observations, a review of sorts

Just a random list of stuff I noticed during
    4 days of Civving !

    I like the little things

    - I like the fact that tiny bridges spring up after
you develop Bridge Building (Now part of another tech)
    - I like the cartoonesque fast lines that appear
behind units after you give them go-to orders.
    - ELVIS !
    - The flavor text from Sattelites, especially as read
    by Spock.
    - Many, many things units do when they are standing
idle, waiting for orders, yours and the AI's.

    It's not difficult, it's challenging !

The game if really harder to beat now, even
on chieftain levels. A couple of examples :

    - I figured Barbarians would be a cheap way to
promote your units, kind of and exploit, boy was
I surprised when 4 of my archers fell before I
was able to eliminate a barb city. In my second
game, barbs even took my capital, making things
very difficult for the later game, as I fell behind
    in , well, everything.

    - I barely won a game on points, even though
I had most of the World Wonders, the most
culture and was the second-largest Civ. In fact,
had the game lasted a few more turns, Ghandi
    would have beat me !

    - Being friendly with one nation practically
guarantees another is gonna be permanently
angry at you. You can please some people
some of the time, but not all people all of the
    time.

    This aint my old CIV

Old habits are hard to break.

    - Using Archers as city defenders instead of
Spearman took some getting used to.

    - Not trying to built as many cities as soon
as possible took some restraint, but seeing
    my treasury decline sharply helps.

    - Enemy units in my territory used to make
me fearful, since it usually meant an attack
was imminent. Now that sneak attack is
impossible, I STILL find myself watching
those units move even though they're
    harmless.

    - Units stopping cause they're out of movement
points, even though they're on railroads still
    catch me by surprise.

    All in all

I'm absolutly loving this game. It's much
    more challenging than previous games,
and most of the changes are for the better.

I'll say this though, playing it on my 2-year-old
computer (now with brand-new graphics card)
means turning the graphics down to minimum,
otherwise I could read "War and Peace" between
    turns.

Check out the Modern version of the Great Artist unit.

As MPT said, RAM will significantly improve performance. I bought an extra GB for about 70 dollars a couple months ago, and it was certainly worth it.
