Heh... you actually want to say that archers with 5XP (and thus 2 city defense promotions, or fs strike promotions) make such good defenders that you can use them for long Great life cycle on them

Oh, I'm already with you on that.

In my next game, I'm putting archers from barracks in every city. And if I can find some copper, I'll stick a spearman in there too.

Good point about using archers for city D. I'll do that in my second game...

And the comment was made that we will have to "unlearn Civ3". Ain't that the truth.

Well, I have to put *something* in my cities...
The AI clearly doesn't let you sit around with empty cities... Maybe only put spearmen on the borders?
