Dar IV The Midevil Era 425 AD to 1130 AD

520 AD Beat the world to Music and receive a Free Great Artist. Start reseraching Metal Casting for Forges.
New York starts construction of the Angor Wat.
Trade the Code of Laws with the Arabs for the Calendar.

540 AD The borders of New York have expanded. The Motsabota built in a far away land.
The warrior rescounting the territory just north west of my empire reveals no barb presence, and so a settler is ordered constructed to claim that land.

The Great Artist paints the Mona Lisa in Atlanta. The borders of Atlanta have expanded. 2X.
This places the nearby Mongolian city into massive cultural influence along with pushing back the Spainish city of Barcelonia's borders.

560 AD Isabella complets the Kong Mio. The Arabs capture the barbarbian town of Libya. The Mongols make peace with Egypt.
The boundaries have Seattle have expanded. This was one turn before I was about to start moving my army out to capture that town.

580 AD Start a settler in Chicago to claim the crabs.

640 AD The borders of Chicago have expanded

660 AD Spices near Chicago connected. Start researching Civil Service. For chaining Farms & Macemen.

680 AD Isabella converts to Confucism. The bordery of Boston have expanded

700 AD The Mongols & Egyptains both cancel the open boarders agreement.
Upgrade the Warrior in Boston to a Spear.
Military units added to the queues of many cities, in a couple of cases in front of the existing builds.
Used a missonary to found Judism in Berlin. They are the only known civ who didn't found a religion.

720 AD Boundaries of Philadelphia expand. Silk near New York connected. Horses near Seattle connected.

760 AD The Church of the Navity has been built in a far away land. San Franciso founded for the clams. Science lowered to 80%

780 AD Los Angeles founded [gold + extra Iron and Wine]. Culture tax eliminated in light of the fact that Health is now much more of a limiting factor than happiness.
I see only one more potiental city spot but can't really afford another town right now, particulary one whose resource can't be explotied until Optics.

800 AD Borders of Washington expand. Taoism has spread to San Franciso. Corn near Seatle connected

820 AD The American empire now has 2 million souls. A great scientist is born in Washington and constructs the Academy there.

840 AD Start reseraching Machinery, which is needed for many techs. The game auto-lowered science to 70% seeing how I was short on cash.

860 AD The Arabs call me up and ask if Currency + 120 gold would be sufficent for Metal Casting. Agreed.
Complete the Angor Wat in New York
Start the revolution for Bureacury. (I wanted to finish the wonder before starting it)
Interesting, a camp doesn't clear forests.

880 AD Increase science to 80%. Hum, the Arabs just adopted Serdom & Vassilage. I guess they have Feudalism.

960 AD Start reseraching Paper, entirely because it leads to Education. Well, I guess I could use a better map of my rivals as well.
Taoism has spread to Los Angles. This results in Taoism being present in the most cities in my empire, and yet most of my production are from cities with Judism.

980 AD Start construction of the Hanging Gardens in Washington. (Taking advantage of the requirements to have an Aquaduct [greatly slowing AI down] + there being stone
in my empire + the burarchy civic choice. [Only 10 turns.] This would also be a great time to have every city grow by 1.

1000 AD San Francisco connected to the empire. Isabella demands we take Confucism. No way.

1010 AD San Franciso's borders expands. This puts a lot of presure on the Arab city of Libyan.

1020 AD Mongols declare war on Egypt. Take advantage of Colosus requiring both a forge & a costal city and start construction in New York. 15 turns due to no Coper

1030 AD Start researching Education. Hum, only the Egyptains are willing to sell their world map. They want too much for it. Sell mine to them for 40 gold.

1040 AD The mongols switch to the Fedualism civics. Trade Drama to Egypt for Literature, their world map, and 50 gold. This places all holy cities of religions founded so far on my map.

1050 AD Salian completes the Sistine Chapel. Still won't trade theology though. Perhaps he wants to found Islam?

1070 AD The Germans switch to the Fedualism civics. Connect crabs off the coast of San Francisco to the empire.

1080 AD Complete the Hanging Gardens in Washington. The borders of Los Angeles expands. Los Angles connected to the empire.
Trade Machinery to Arabs for Feudalism.

1120 AD Buy Construction from Germans for Drama & 30 gold. Sell Drama to Arabs for Horseback Riding & 20 gold.

1130 AD We have entered the Renance Era. Start reseraching Liberism for the free tech and civics. End of Dar IV

We are currently well ahead in techs, the only known tech we don't have is Theology (Known by Mongls & Arabs)
The completion of the Hanging Gardens has created an unhappy citizen in Washington, but that will be fixed in a turn or two; the gold mine near Los Angeles just completed and now just needs the road.

      The long, long dark years

      Noble difficulty

      Ancient I
      Ancient II
      Classical
      Midieval
      Renaissance

The medieval period lasts from 400 BC to 1400 AD. The goal for this period is to increase our army so that we are no longer dead last in soldiers and invite attack by our belligerent neighbors.
Our research progression with the dates discovered is:
      Iron Working (600 BC) – Polytheism (525 BC) – Monotheism (400 BC, followed by a revolution) – Horseback Riding (100 BC) – Metal Casting (275 AD) – Machinery (640 AD) – Mathematics (760 AD) – Currency (880 AD) – Drama (980 AD) – Construction (980 AD, trade) – Sailing (1040 AD, peace deal) – Theology (1060 AD) – Calendar (1070 AD, in a trade) – Philosophy (1150 AD) – Music (1210 AD) – Monarchy (1240 AD) – Literature (1310 AD) – Feudalism (1380 AD, trade) – Printing Press (1400 AD)

Other noteworthy events include an open border treaty with the Germans in 600 BC followed by the founding of Philadelphia in 425 BC. In the year 350 BC we are ranked third richest country and promptly Genghis Khan cancel the open border treaty. Our valiant scout gets killed by barbarians in 300 BC while in Washington the first swordsmen unit is started. We refuse the unreasonable demands of Genghis Khan, moving us closer to war in 175 BC, but we are not ready. We liberate the city of Scythian from the barbarians and include it into our mighty empire. By 100 AD we have finished several units of swordsmen and feel a little safer now. In 150 AD Saladin tries to blackmail a technology from us, but he barked up the wrong tree. By 250 AD we feel comfortable in our military so that we continue some civilian production with a new missionary in Washington. Temple are blooming everywhere and in 375 Zoroaster is born in Boston where he founds the Kong Miao. For some reason, this seems to upset Genghis Khan and he declares war in 425 AD. In turn we resume the creation of swordsmen and invite Hatshepsut to the party, which she joins in exchange for Horseback Riding. In 600 AD, with a little help from Egypt, we capture Turfan with three sword- and one axemen versus two archers and one UU. In 620 AD, despite the war with the Mongols, we found Atlanta and capture Sarmatia from the barbarians, no need to recall the small force sent out before the outbreak of the war. In 760 a great scientist founds his academy in Washington and Boston begins work on the Chichen Itza just one turn later.
We are ranked number one for the first time as the largest civilization in 820. We trade for Alphabet from our Egyptian friends and give them Metal Casting for it in 840. The same year Karakorum falls to our victorious troops. Moreover, Saladin trades us incense for some fur, which we have in abundance. Our good trade relations with Saladin continue in 980 when we acquire Construction and 100 gold in exchange for Code-of-laws. The completion of Chichen Itza in Boston in 1030 sends Genghis Khan to the negotiating table and we wrestle a peace from him in exchange for Sailing and 60 gold. The year 1040, which saw the peace deal with the Mongols, also witnessed the completion of the Hanging Gardens in Washington and the cancellation of the fur trade with Saladin.
Trade deals with Bismarck (Calendar and 210 gold for Theology, 1070), Saladin (Crabs for Ivory, 1140) and Hatshepsut (Rice for Corn, 1180) are accepted while a request by Genghis Khan to declare war on Egypt is summarily dismissed in 1080.
Great works are being start all over the country; Akron builds Angkor Wat (1160 – 1330), Boston the Sistine Chapel (1170 – 1330), New York the Globe Theater (1250 – 1350) and Washington constructs the National Epic (1270 – 1340). Boston also works on Notre Dame but construction, which began in 1330, will last past 1400.
The village of Chicago is founded in 1300 and maybe it will contribute to our empire in the future, but for now it remains a backward place.
The year 1330 sees some diplomatic action as we turn down requests from both Genghis Khan and Bismarck. In 1360 we strengthen our ties with Hatshepsut by sharing world maps and agreeing on a 5 gold/turn for fur exchange. Saladin offers Feudalism for Paper and 240 gold and we reluctantly agree.
The year 1400 advances use to the Renaissance. We are ranked first in all categories now. A magnificent future awaits us …

        Warlord level

DAR4: The Medieval era of Caligula's Financial Havens

325: Starting the medieval era by switching to Slave civic for poprushing. Hadn't thought of that as an option before.
I guess it didn't appeal to me. Reading other DARs for the early eras, I have to say it looks pretty effective.

Having second thoughts about sending my GA so close to the barbarian city with only on defender. Send another after him
leaving Capitol Hill undefended until I can build a replacement archer (2 turns)

300: Poprushing archer in Capitol, Harbour in Boston. Doing a little MM. NY is treatend by a barb warrior, I trust my luck.
275; Saladin demands 315 beaker worth of Mathematics or I will be sorry. I persuade him to give me 75 beakers worth of
Priesthood for it, that kicks him up to 5th in scores. I won't like to see his catapults at my borders, but he will have a hard
time transporting them to me trough my Hinduist friens of the north. Plus I don't want him to be a complete pushover
if the Hatty or Bismarck desides to teach him a lesson in manners.
        Judaism spreads to Boston.

Interresting thing on Harbors: They DO NOT WORK! Boston had three trade routes for +2 each before it was built,
and exactly the same after it is built. 2x1.5 equals 3, not 2...?

        200: Salad becomes Jewish.
175: Great Sci creates academy on Capitol Hill
125: Currency gives me 4 trade routes in each costal city, only nets me +5cpt as all new trade routes are internal of +1cpt each.
100: Great Artist becomes super specialist in Philly

        Entering the ADs:
50: Visigoth captured from the Barbarians north of Capitol. Wine for everybody! No casualties, nice promotions.
175: Settler is slain by barbs. Stupid thing sending them off into the FoW unprotected. Raplacement ordered.
200: Swiched to Serfdom, Vassalage, and Heredity rule. I like to combine my anarcies, this is the second this game.
680: Founded Taoism, swiched to Representation. I didn't do Pacifism becouse only 1 city is still on state religion.
Took Yayoi form the barbs. Lots of fur and on coast. My replacemend settler from the 175-slain goes settling somwhere
else (by cows and horses south of Capitol I think)
780: Izzy demands I turn away from the right path and converts my people to Budhism. I blow my nose at her and send her away.
(Must remember to ugrade my defence in NY someday soon)
820: St. Augustine gives me a third in military power, not as bad as i suspected, as military has not been a
priority for centuries. The mysterious seventh civ is seventh. I fear no sudden attacks from see soon.
820: My eight city Chicago i founded on shores south of Capitol. Old Serai (Mongol) is spotted NW on my penninsula.
920: Bismarck converts to Budhism, he is still at +3 relation but that will change. He is not strong, but teaming with Izzy
I might get some trouble. I have fought no wars yet
1020: Notre Dame built in Boston. Started two galleys to circumvirate the globe. (when I get the tech for ocean sailing)

        {Correction (written well into the Renessaince era): it seem I can not upgrade my galleys to Caravels. Why? I give them away to the nearest civs, and starts two new ones. This mistake costed me the circumvirate bonus by 1turn later in the game, grrr}

The continent is discovered save Izzy's country. She refuses to give me open borders.

Since I am liked by everybody 'xept Izzy, I might consider a diplomatic victory. Right now I think Space is the most
        likely though.

1170: Entering Renessaince era by discovering Education

I spent the most of this era pressing enter for next turn. I set up priority lists for bulildings and techs, only stopping
once in a while to build a few miliatry units. I am running at 70% science, not that I need it that low, I just like some cash in
in my coffers for upgrading. I easily lead the tech race anyway. I am so far ahead in score and in every important F9-category,
finishing this game is just work. It might be more fun if some of the others dare to attack me, but I can at the moment not
        see who that could be.

        Overall strategy evaluation:
The trading havens I was aiming for in my costal cities are not as great as I hoped they would be. New York and Atlanta is
netting 12ctp each from trade, which is not bad. Others are not so good, as there is only 23 foreign cities to trade with,
and only 10 of of them gives 3cpt each.
The total #trade routes is 28 giving a total of 61 cpt.
Has the strategy reached it's potential? At least until I can open trade with England overseas, I think. The focus now is to turn the commerce into something useful.

            Artuero DAR 4: Noble

            DAR 4: The Medieval Era (175 A.D. to 1160 A.D.) Noble

As you may recall, the Americans remain at war with Ghengis Khan who is threatening a number of American cities with chariots. Thus far his efforts have been minimal with some minor pillaging and the taking of a worker. We have lost one unit, the 6th Warriors in eliminating one of his.

200 AD – Zoroaster welcomes the Medieval Era by building the Kashi Vishwanath in Washington. With Khan threatening again I make peace by offering him monotheism in exchange. He accepts and we breathe a sigh of relief.

500 AD – Taoism is founded in Madrid, making that city home to three religions. At the same time, barbarian archers threaten Boston. Fortunately by this time my military has improved and I am able to dispatch a chariot to deal with him.

560 AD - Chuang Tzu was born in Madrid. I send him to Angle, which is looking to be the third possible cultural victory city. Because the city is on our northern front, cultural development is useful to push back Khan’s borders.

640 AD - Chuang Tzu establishes the Kong Miao in Angle. The Germans, meanwhile, conquered the barb city of Navajo to the west of our empire but in our sphere of influence, guaranteeing an attack against it at some point.

700 AD - Homer is born in Washington, thanks to our discovery of music which took less time once I realized I could profitably put research at 100% due to the religious shrine income. I send Homer to Angle to join the city as a super specialist.

980 AD – Completed the Great Lighthouse in New York.

1000 – Converted to Hinduism at Hatshepsut’s request.

1010 – Founded Islam in Angle. Aristotle is born in Washington and immediately establishes his academy there.

1110 – Founded Philadelphia, extending the southern edge of the empire.

1160 – Entered the Renaissance era through researching Nationalism. I am attempting to reach cavalry.

The time seems to fly by without accomplishing my goals. At this point I have six cities, enough to get two sets of cathedrals going if I can get around to it:

            Washington (11, Spiral Minaret)
            Madrid (5, Work boat (2))
            New York (7, Market (6))
            Angle (6, Notre Dame (10)
            Boston (7, Theater (8)
            Philadelphia (1, Theatre (43))

I have a good income (26 versus expenses of 22), and my military appears strong enough for the moment although I remain in last place in number of soldiers (and approval rate, strangely). In about ten turns I plan to start mass producing cavalry and attacking someone, probably Ghengis Khan.

I have now founded (or captured) all religions. I have not used this strategically however, and my cities are just a hodge podge of whatever randomly spread there. I am number one in land area but third in population (not that far behind, however) and number one in gold. Number 3 in food and production but fifth in life expectancy and last in exports and imports.

I have been using the whip under Slavery considerably. This is not something I had done before, but with such a fertile area and populations growing too large to remain happy, it was clearly the right thing to do. I found it effective enough that it is something I will use when I lead other peoples so I am glad for this course’s teaching me new tricks.

              Monarch, monarch, monarch...

DAR4 – The Medieval era. Part 1: 100AD-1030AD (Medieval era not over yet!)

Monarch difficulty (I’m beginning to think I can handle it. Unlike previously, you’ll recall )

The goals at the end of the last phase were to shore up military and prepare for a possible attacks. Good things so far have included the size of our civ, and the amount of research we’re generating. Bad things – well, mainly our religion, or lack thereof. I still didn’t have a state religion until right at the end of the last era, and many of our early resources will be devoted to spreading Christianity throughout our civilization.

So, at 100AD we’re 3rd in pop with 697,000 subjects, and 9 cities. Good relations with all, but starting to get a tiny bit frosty with Genghis. I have a feeling there’ll be war there at some point (reading others’ DARs up to this point, I suspect I may be right.)

125AD – Sailing discovered – Alphabet taken. Christianity spreads in Washington, the capital, thanks to a missionary. It immediately starts work on a Monastery to help spread the Word.

Not sure what to do tech-wise – Alphabet is clearly a must, for trading purposes, but then I may go back and fill in some gaps.

175AD – Genghis cancels Open Borders treaty. Hmmm. War may be sooner than I think.
200AD – Buddhism spreads in Atlanta; bit late for that! Copper is finally connected, after ages and ages. Two intrepid axemen go and capture Khazak for us – a city on the far SW corner of our empire.
225AD – Horses connected at long last as well. I’ll take Horseback Riding next.
250AD – Alphabet discovered, Horseback Riding taken.
300AD – Trade with Hatsepshut; my Theology for her Archery and Mathematics. This officially gives us #1 spot on the score table
325AD – Horseback Riding discovered – Calendar taken. Calendar is then traded with Saladin for Theology, however, and I’m torn where to go next. Maybe towards Machinery, or Music for a great work? I’m sure I can get to Music before anyone else, so Music wins out – Literature taken, then Music.
375AD – Christianity in NY. That’s the bulk of our empire converted now.
425AD – Literature discovered, Music in 10. Meanwhile, Christianity continues to spread, with ¾ of our empire now converted.
500AD – Lots of Monasteries and missionaries being built for the final push.

560AD – Uh-oh. Genghis demands wine, then declares war when I refuse. Big trouble. The very next turn, he sends 4 Keshiks over the border towards Seattle – thankfully, I had garrisoned it several turns earlier in anticipation, so it was never really threatened. I start building spearmen in a hurry (it was stupid not to build any in the first place really) and send them hastily his way. I am powerless to stop him wreaking havoc in terms of resources though – he cuts of our copper supply, as well as hurting a number of cottages and mines near Seattle. Yeah, those ones.

Once I’ve researched Music, which will only be 3 turns now, it’ll be time to get a load of cash and upgrade the Warriors into Spearmen – I can pull 75/turn at 100% cash.

600AD – Music discovered, and a Great Artist (Homer) in Washington. I send it straight over to Atlanta in the hope of persuading nearby Hurrian it would much rather be a part of our empire than of dear old Isabella’s.
              Ohhh I need spearmen!

680AD – Update on the war – it’s going OK, I’m certainly not losing any ground, and may start to think about going on the offensive soon enough.
Meanwhile, all our cities are now officially Christian – though I know too little of the world outside to think about converting anyone else. I’ll have to stay in my own little Christian bubble for now, methinks.
700AD – Research back up to 60% - we have taken some losses, but we’re holding for now.
760AD – Construction discovered, Metal Casting taken. Catapults, here we come!
780AD – Trade Construction for Code of Laws with Saladin. Can’t hurt…
I’m also building the Hanging Gardens in Washington – it would be our first wonder if we could get it.
820AD – Someone or other does their history of the largest empire, and it doth pleaseth me greatly that we’re #1.
Metal Casting discovered – Machinery up next. Hopefully we can get some kind of production going. Meanwhile, we’re besieging the nearest Mongol city.
840AD – Revolt in Hurrian – suppressed though.
              900AD – Machinery – Engineering taken.
960AD – Great Scientist in Washington, which means Philosophy is discovered.

City taken from the Mongols – they sue for peace with 130 gold. Not bad for simply treading water. I need to think about a more concerted offensive against them before too long, just because I think they’re far too dangerous simply to stay there.

980AD - Hahahaha. Revolt in Hurrian (how unexpected!) so it’s now ours. Huzzah.
HANGING GARDENS completed – our first wonder. Ridiculous really, but we’ve finally got one – in terms of culture and great people it will come in handy, and we’ll be growing like weeds before too long I think.
1020AD – Switch to Organized Religion. I said I was going to do this approximately 1000 years ago, when I totally forgot about it. This officially makes me the world’s biggest idiot.
1030AD – Engineering, Drama taken next. About time too. Isabella declares war on Genghis – or it might have been the other way round. Either way, the result’s the same. Spain is about to be a sprawling mass of brown, probably.

That’s where I’m going to end it for now, simply because I’ve been playing 2 hours and need a break (I’m not hardcore quite yet!). Things looking kind-of up, but the Mongols are still a royal pain. I need to focus partly on military to wipe them out once and for all. This is what I've got to contend with:

Courthouses also need to go up, and I’m thinking about heading for banking, simply for the extra money. Although I must admit I’m not sure where the production is going to come from. I don’t really know what I’m doing tech-wise yet – this is only my 4th ever game, so I’m still somewhat blind.

The main empire, such as it is:

Not the end of an era, so part 2 will be up soon in this thread.

Heh, thanks. It cost me enough to do it, but still...

                  Here's part 2: (1030AD-1270AD, Monarch)

So….the plan was to build up military, and at some point start thinking about attacking Genghis. Otherwise, I’ve got a fairly strong economy with which to build up and grab some important techs before anyone else can.

1050AD – Courthouses being built in 4 cities as planned.
1060AD – Genghis builds Great Library. I’ve all but given up on most Wonders now – the only one I’m currently building is Angkor Wat in Atlanta – this lets me take advantage of my stone as well as getting a bit more production out of priests.
1070AD – Civil Service discovered – Guilds taken. Switch to Bureaucracy.
1080AD – Switch complete – we’re now getting 93 beakers from our capital alone.
1100AD – With the peace treaty now expired, I’m starting to get a little wary of Genghis over the border. I start upgrading units with what little money I have.
                  1140AD – Guilds discovered, Banking in 4.
Christian Cathedral built in Washington – should help with happiness and (mainly) culture.
1160AD – Islam founded in the Spanish city of Toledo – which is right next to some of our cities. Great Artist, anyone?
1170AD – Angkor Wat finally built in Atlanta. Banking discovered – Paper taken (3 turns).
1190AD – Saladin trades his Compass for my Music.
1200AD – Paper discovered, Printing Press taken – which should provide the economy with a much-needed boost.
1240AD – Good old Hatty finally trades Drama and Optics for my Civil Service.
1270AD – Printing Press discovered, Education taken, and the Renaissance is finally entered.

A quiet 250 years, but prosperous for my people. The plan is ultimately to upgrade the border forces to the latest spec, stopping some research for a while. I have at least a 3-4 tech lead with which to play anyway – the only person who has anything I don’t is Isabella, with Divine Right, and I will end up trading that, as it’s a next to useless tech for me at this point. (This is the stage at which someone tells me it’s actually the most important tech in the game and how could I skip it? LOL)

Extra cash can be generated by building some banks and stuff as well. But now the military machine is just about ready to go to full-scale unit production, with forges and the National Epic built. I’m half-thinking about beelining straight to a military civic tech, and really making it a productive capacity in terms of unit, but I may have too fragile an economy to be thinking about that at all.

Things are going OK anyway, if a little slowly.

Here are the numbers, and an overview of the empire:

                    DAR 7

500AD I have now completed my conquest of China, and in three turns I will discover civil service. I’ve been trading techs to back fill as I go. I have nine cities now and plan to consolidate as I head toward military tradition to try a cavalry rush of my weaker neighbors. Beijing looks like a good choice for the forbidden palace. I now have to focus on courthouses, another Roman half price building. Six courthouses coming up.

560AD I have discovered civil service and decide it’s time to enlighten my fellow Civers with knowledge of the alphabet, for a price that is. Is the alphabet monopoly an exploit? I suspect it doesn’t always work this nicely, but it has this time. It’s allowed stratification of AI Civ research capabilities. Capac, Washington and Asoka are leaders, trailing me slightly, while Mao (gone), Isabella, and Bismarck are lower science Civs. OTOH, getting a Civ to make a fair trade, or any trade for that matter is sometimes a challenge. But the alphabet ploy beats the heck out of the rampant tech trading that usually occurs, without killing tech trading altogether.

700AD Before I really settled into my building phase I decided that Boston would look better as part of the Roman Empire, so I had to take it from the Americans. Boston guards the narrow isthmus that separates “my” subcontinent from Capac’s.

900AD I’m now researching education in the path that Yuufo suggests, which leads to military tradition.

                    Civil Service
                    Music
                    Philosophy
                    Paper
                    Education
                    Nationalism
                    Liberalism -> military tradition
                    Gunpowder

Not long after I had made peace with the Americans, Capac invited me to make war with the Americans. Here was a critical point in diplomacy, so I went for the improved relations with the strongest Civ. The screenshot shows my axemen and war elephants closing in on Washington after capturing Atlanta.

1040AD I have entered the Renaissance era with the discovery of education. Now I move on to nationalism.

                      Emperor Difficulty

                      DAR Record, links work:

800 A.D. Great Scientist is born in Washington. Great Library kinda screwed up the Prophet from being born, I still had about a 70% chance for a Great Prophet oh well, Great Scientist becomes a super specialist in Washington

900 A.D. Yay, Civil Service is done. Now it's time for me to rock and freakin' roll. I switch to Organized religion and Bureaucracy. Starting on Metal Casting, times are real cheap, gonna do some power researching and catchup. Cap has broken the 100 beaker mark.

1000 A.D. Metal Casting done. Traded it to Hatty for Construction and 10 gold. Now working on Machinery(6 turns) New York started the Hanging Gardens because well it was available to and I have stone, stone helps a lot. I don't expect to finish it, either way it's good

1050 A.D. Machinery done. Machinery to Saladin for Theology and 50 gold. Compass next, then Guilds.

1090 A.D. Hanging Gardens done in New York. Wow, didn't expect that, and I was having some slight healthly problems too. Very nice grab. Got Compass last turn and going for Guilds ( 6 turns) Fur to Izzy for gems, could've gotten bananas but oh well, too lazy to switch what is done is done.

1150 A.D. Guilds is done, going for Banking in 4 turns. People keep ask me to cancel deals with Hatty and I keep refusing, this is having a slight negative toll on my relations, but it is almost time for the massive war to begin. Fur to Hatty for 6 gpt, hehe I bet that won't help things.

1200 A.D. Starting to make military now, some catapults and Knights. Might wait until Grenadiers, dunno yet. Washington is making a bank then military units. First target will probably be Izzy. Engineering done in 2 turns, next is Gunpowder. Guilds to Bismarck for Drama and Optics and 100 gold.

1280 A.D. Contact made with Elizabeth, Errrr ok, where was she hiding, her score is less than me and under Confy so she's no threat. Another Great Scientist is born in Washington and I make an academy in Philadelphia, it has 28 base beakers so thatís a good upgrade.

1300 A.D. Gunpowder is finished bring us to the Renaissance Era. Yay, we start on Chemistry (8 turns) Has anyone gotten Liberalism? Man this game is weird, everything seems really slow and easy, dunno what it is.

                        Monarch

As we left it it was 975BC and I had just built the Oracle. My next priority was alphabet, which netted me a lot of basic techs over the next few turns, including the wheel.

I used the missionary from CoL to transfer Confucianism (which I had adopted) to New York, and both New York and Washington soon worked in temples to contain unrest.

I had 4 workers (2 more were soon to be added pre-granaries) and post-wheel roading up my cities was the priority.

After Alphabet I did Sailing, as only Bismarck had it, and I knew it would be a while before it would get traded. I wanted the Lighthouse at New York, as I could see all of my later cities would be coastal.

Next research priorioty was Monarchy, as looking at my empire I could see happiness was going to be a problem. I had wine in Boston, and was clearly going to have to rely on hereditary rule to get the capital to a decent population (which of course I wanted to do ).

Somebody had Polytheism and Monotheism, but there were no trades. I wanted to go for the utterly fantastic organised religion (balanced cos its high upkeep!) along with hereditary rule (yes I am a complete miser when it comes to anarchy) so I did these myself, and literature to set up for Great Lib in the capital.

I had traded for pottery so granaries were starting to go up around about the time Monarchy was done. I had also traded for iron working, and Boston (my main unit city throughout the game) had in the screenie below just kicked out a vet axe to deal with the pesky barbs in the South West.

After 'Poly and Literature I went for Monotheism, then Philosophy (which, annoyingly, I was beaten to by Bismarck).

Around 300BC I started on another settler at Philadelphia, and another at Boston. In retrospect this was a little late, but I was concerned about keeping my research high. Also, with the units I had (good ones anyway), pacifying (i.e killing) the barbs in the South West I didn't have much of an escort, and there were barbs to the West where I wanted to settle. New York and Washington were on wonder duty.

In the end my fifth city was the 'safe' one on the cow, and my sixth Atlanta in the North was too late to get the plum spots in the west, one of which was taken by the mongols, and another held by the barbs but taken pretty soon by the mongols. If only I had been a little quicker.

In 200BC I went to HR and OR.

In early AD I was just about to take my 7th city, the Barb city of Illinois.
