  • 1 turn to Victory and the space mission fails? WTF!

I had all the espionage points going and was sabotaging my two major space ship opponents beautifully -- all thanks to the answers I got a couple of days ago from this forum. And I launched and kept pressing Enter towards the final victory and got to "1 turn to victory!" and then got the message: "Mission failed. All progress towards a space ship blah blah blah ..."

    What is THIS all about?

There are a certain number of mandatory parts to build for the ship, and some optional parts like thrusters and casing. If the number of casing built is less than the maximum (or less than number of thrusters) then the space ship will launch but have less than 100% chance of successful arrival.

Thanks, trev. I think the game is somewhat misleading, then. I assumed that the ship, with fewer thrusters and only one engine, would simply travel more slowly. I hadn't thought the damned thing would fall apart because I didn't build every last component. Live and learn.

On the space ship screen it'll say X% chance of success.

OzzyKP, thanks for that; I've not noticed that. But my wife frequently points out that I miss a lot of things!

I've just had a space victory and at no point was there a "chance-of-success" percentage shown anywhere on the screen. I had everything built but casings so the launch button was there from 1 casing on and there was never anything shown except the message "Estimate time: 10 turns to victory". Which is what I had with the failed mission discussed at the beginning of this thread.

Where should I look for this success rating?

On the spaceship screen, in the upper left corner it says:

              Welcome to your spaceship
              Mission Success: 60%

Though I noticed if you don't go to the spaceship screen yourself, but are taken there after completing a spaceship part it instead says in the upper left:

                You have completed SS Thrusters
Please add it to your spaceship

I imagine many people usually only look at the spaceship screen after completing a part, so don't know about the mission success chance. So it does seem to be an oversight on their part. They should display that at all times.

In case you're not away, you can get to the spaceship screen by going to the victory conditions screen (F8, the red fist) and then clicking on view under spacerace.

                I hope this helps!

I think "adding it to your spaceship" is purely fluff related to the purely fluff graphical display. Even if you don't "add" it in the graphical display, it's still there and will function in your spaceship.

Thanks, OzzyKP, that is an oversight on their part. I'll remember to check via the View link.

Wodan11, I've just figured I had to click to add the piece. It gives me a little bit of pleasure to put it all together, fluff or not.

Oh, I agree. I just wanted to make sure you didn't think that's why your spaceship failed, because you didn't click the button to "add" it.

Yep, you rushed your spaceship and launched it before all the parts where in place so it failed. Tough luck but that's the way it goes.

Finish building the ship. Sometimes, you shouldn't build all of the thrusters because it would take more time to build them than building them takes off of the time it takes to win after the ship is completed, but I always add all the necessary casing to make absolutely sure that the mission will be successful. You can have really bad luck sometimes in this game.
