  • Survey about Civilization IV

    Dear Apolyton-community, Civ-Players and fans!

for my Bachelor’s thesis in ”virtual gaming world“ at Cologne University of Applied Sciences (and as a fan from the start) I’m carrying out a study on Civilization IV. I want to find out if the game imparts knowledge about complex systems. Therefore I have created a questionaire.

It takes approx. 15 minutes to answer all the questions and you can enter a raffle to win one of two Amazon gift cards!

Here is the link to my survey: http://civ4.civsurvey.com (english version)

    (german version: http://civ4.fragenzumspiel.de )

Thank you in advance to all answering this questionnaire! In case you are interested I can provide you with the results after my thesis will have been marked (approx. September).

    Patrick

    A note on privacy:
The data will be saved completely anonymously and will be exclusively used for my Bachelor’s thesis. There is no commercial intention!

    Patrick,

I don't think CIV makes people more organized, or turns them into better planners. I suspect that people who are good at and enjoy those types of activities are drawn to the game.

I would caution you in jumping to conclusions on causality. This appears to be another version of "Does violence in videogames result in violence in children." The research has shown that violent children are drawn to violent games.

      Hi Norselord,

I fully agree! There are no simple causalities (as Anderson and Co. preach), but you can have correlations which should be further examined. My goal is not preaching "Civilization is good for you and your children" but getting another point of view from players. That's why I am examining Civilization IV. Maybe players just get better in the game (and that's it), maybe they learn something (whatever that may be, hopefully nothing wrong), maybe the game makes them think about politics or maybe there is absolutely nothing that makes a difference between a civ-player and my mom.

Thank you for your concerns (no kidding!)! I hope that I made my position clear. My conclusion won't be too simple (*** hoc ergo propter hoc) .

      Patrick

P.S.: *** stands for c u m ... I thought that this board would know the latin meaning
