I have won on Emperor a few times but no matter how far ahead in tech I get on Immortal I can not sustain it after about 1400. I can win if I play continents and war monger but can you actually win with a builder game? Max I think I can manage is about 8 cities so that is part of it, but those AI bonuses are just so big that they really come to bear in the later game. So, has anyone done this? And I don't mean some weird conditions, just a normal game.

Wodan, elaborate a bit. Who were you, what kind of world, more than once? All that stuff. No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

I pretty much only play Immortal these days, so I couldn't really answer your specifics, Blaupanzer, except perhaps to run a thread walkthrough when I start a new game. Anyway it's definitely not an impossible dream, Crossfire.
It's interesting, though, because in my experience it's the other way around... you said, "no matter how far ahead in tech I get on Immortal I can not sustain it." For me, I get *behind* in tech and it's not till the mid or even late game that I leap ahead. Are you doing a lightbulb strategy, and that's what you're referring to? If so, I wouldn't call that "getting ahead" because a lightbulb strategy is inherently limited to the techs the AIs have researched... the most it can do is give you all the techs researched by everyone. Thus, I'm not sure I would call that "ahead" though I suppose in a 1-on-1 comparison technically you would be ahead of any given AI.

Wodan, thanks for the reply. No, I have been playing as Huayna and usually getting the Oracle and sometimes the Pyramids too. I have been keeping all my great people and taking advantage of my ability to build Wonders quickly. I think about the time I hit Science is when I start to slip. Generally I switch mines to windmills and put lumber mills if I need production (not usually) or parks on my wooded tiles as I hit Electricity and switch to Environmentalism. Any suggestions for the late game?

Size is necessary, your land area, number of cities etc must at least match the largest AI to keep competitive in GDP, tech etc necessary to win a space race. So a period of conquest earlier in the game is vital to increase that number of cities, hopefully getting some shrines in the process.

always good to note who founds the early religions and when the corresponding shrines are completed. If they are a close neighbor, they become my first target. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

And what do you mean "hit Science"? You mean Scientific Method?
What do you use to get ? Specialists or cottages? Do you specialize your cities?
Generally I find Free Market or State Property a much better modern era civic than Environmentalism.
