  • 4 starting techs?!

Hi, I have been playing Civ IV since its release. I don't claim to be a great player but I know something really strange when I see it... I just started a custom BTS game on Noble with Alexander/Greece. I built my first city on Turn 0... I then looked to my tech tree and noticed that I was starting with four techs... Fishing and Hunting, of course, but also The Wheel and Agriculture! Not understanding, I went into my event log to make sure there wasn't a goodie hut that I had somehow uncovered when I built Athens... nothing.

Am I missing something obvious here (it IS early and I have only just started drinking my morning coffee,) or is this some strange bug? I'm going to save the game and start another one... this just feels... wrong!

I guess I am missing something big here... I started a new game with the same settings as Asoka of India and had four techs to start as well. ?! I always thought civs started with 2 techs.

What difficulty level are you playing at? I've never seen that before.

I just loaded the game again and noticed that it's on Chieftain. I don't know why since I always play on Noble and I haven't played on Chieftain... ever. But maybe that explains this. Why it was set to that level is a mystery.

That's it from Chieftain to Noble you have the added research for the wheel and ag.

The only game I ever played at a low level was the very first game when it first came out.
On the opening screen there was a hut that I opened and got a settler from it. I thought ,man civ IV seems easy.

I've had that happen before... while it normally remembers the last settings, it sometimes just resets itself mysteriously back to the default settings. I also didn't notice it once until a few turns in and the world wasn't what I thought it would it be...
              Keep on Civin'
