That seems a bit extreme. But I usually play pangea, so what do I know?

That said if you are ahead of the AI in research getting several monasteries can be very nice. I would build them in high science production cities, or if you can get them early and have the wonder benefits of AP, etc. build them everywhere. A 60% boost in science until Sci Method is nothing to sneeze at. Of course when it comes time to bite the bullet it can be painful.
Going for Astronomy earlier is almost always a good bet. Losing the Colossus and/or Monuments /Stonehenge isn't that big of a deal, and you usually make it up quickly and more with transcontinental trade, and the extrayou get with Corporation/Free Market.
I have built monstaries after scientific method and they still get the hammer, culture and gold bonuses from the appropriate wonders. I will chekc tonight when I go home and play, but I think I am right on this one.

I don't think you can build monastaries after you learn Scientific Method. However, the old ones do everything except the 10% science bonus. The AP and Sankore wonder effects are not cancelled as far as I recall. I know for certain that the Sistine Chapel effects continue unabated. No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

The problem with Sankore is when I can build it I'm beelining Lib and will switch to free rel as I go into the golden age completing Taj. so it's usefullness is way too short lived. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Yeah... I rarely build Sankore for that very reason. The lifespan seems too short to be worth using the hammers.
But, if I'm in a MP game with you, and I see you rushing to lib, I might research paper as a side step to heading for steel, and build it, since I won't get to free religion for a much longer time.Keep on Civin'

No sympathy.
This is saying "I play the same way every game and an alternate strategy doesn't fit into that." Well, duh.
/sorry rah, I'm in a hardass mode as I am just coming out of a deadline at work and the Art people let me down whereas my people got all their work done, but, yes, you guessed it: Art's deliverable is my responsibility though I don't have authority over them. Arrrrghhh!!!!

To me, choosing education after paper is an auto for the universities. And as long as you're that far down that path you might as well convert the golden ring at the end of it.
Some techs just naturally follow others like going guilds after Feud. Or bronze after mining.
Some games I go the military path to steel prior to lib, others I don't. It depends on what's happening around me.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Yeah, but Woodan is correct in a way. While I don't play every game the same, I do find myself falling into one of a few ruts. And the more I learn the game the fewer ruts there are.
For a general start I'll go oracle, found conf, build shrine, spread missionaries, blah blah blah.
If I'm financial, I'll lean towards a cottage economy.., blah blah blah.
If I'm on the sea, and there's islands near, it's Great Lighthouse, Colosus blah blah blah.
If I'm industrious or have stone or both, it's pyramids and specialists.
And either method it's just spotting the time to take your neighbor whether it be early ax rush. When you get cats or later trebs. Macemen or a good UU, and then automatically at steel.
So while there are lots of choices, the number of them has narrowed considerably the longer I've played it.
At least with MP, other humans think the same way, so you have to at least compete on your decisions. If I prioritize a wonder playing SP, I'll get it 99% of the time, but playing other humans makes it considerably less reliable. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Well, Flavor Dave, looks like while i was asking questions on an unrelated topic, some interesting information was dug up that addresses some of your problems:
I think this applies to what is bothering you in your games.
