  • "Darius I" is a stupid name!

Ok, I have been bothered for a long time by this!
And now finally I'm going to express it!

It is silly to add a 'I' to the name of the first person with such a name!
Darius II makes sense but Darius I is silly!
When Darius I was Darius nobody knew yet there would be a Darius II.

So from now on this is the correct format:
    Darius
    Darius II
    Darius III
    etc....

Same with Justinian, Philip, Karl, etc. etc.
*Phew, I'm glad I got rid of that!*

Perhaps this is done because the first in the line, isn't always the most famous or well-known?

I liked it better when they used nicknames instead of roman numerals.

For example instead of Willem I, it would be Willem the Silent.

There were some pretty interesting versions in the middle ages too...

It´s only stupid if you assume that it´s a denomination of his place in the succession.

Did he use the name "Darius I" himself, or is the numerical a later addition by historians or others? because if he DID use the denomination himself, it probably had nothing whatsoever to do with his place in the succession. If it was a succession thing though, then I agree with you. Silly.
      I think, therefore I ponder.

Odd names to leaders has always existed. I can come up with a few from my Danish history: Valdemar Sejr (Valdemar The Conqueror), and Valdemar Atterdag (Valdemar Anotherday?). We even had a king called Harald Bluetooth, and before him Gorm The Old.

I see your point, and I would have a hard time choosing a leader by the name Frederik or Christian in a society based on democracy, running a theatre called monarchy.

But that is reality - fortunately we can go our own ways in CIV

If adopted by the guy himself, then "the first" is a sign of megalomania (not unexpected in a Persian god-king) or at the very least a big ego.

If adopted by historians, it's simply to distinguish between others.

Either way, doesn't bother me that much. There are several much bigger issues I'd rather see changed.

It is not really true. In Spain the actual king is named Juan Carlos I, not only Juan Carlos.
Maybe will not ever be a Juan Carlos II, but his name is Juan Carlos I anyway.

It could be silly but is.

Ethelred the Unready was actually Ethelred II, as it happens.

Yes, but did he (or his parents) name him that, or did historians in much later years?
