  • I just witnessed the AI going for a cultural win.

Ramses (IND, SPI). He had marble in his starting location, and stone 9 tiles away. Thebes built 13 wonders, Elephantine 5, but Heliopolis just one, and this last city was about 30 turns short when my space ship landed in 1969 (good date).

He got 5 religions (excl Hindu and Judaism) and 9 cities and the three late culture wonders. There was some impressive focus and beelining for the wonders, and he kept beating me to them every time (I was somewhat distracted with military stuff and too slow on the builds vs IND).

Apart from the third city missing wonders, (although 14 towns turns into a lot of culture) he switched to the full culture slider somewhat late, but this was possibly due to Hannibal's unwanted militarism forcing his hand. He had Inf, SAM and Tanks and was researching fission when he switched over. 500 cpt is a good rate if you can get there soon enough. Sadly for him, he was in Bureaucracy instead of Free Speech when I checked at the end.

Apart from the obvious IND benefits, the SPI, while not the strongest for cultural win, does go with the Egyptian UB to allow lots of priests for shrines and popping late religions.

Good to see. Well done Blake.

BTW - after I'd won I reloaded, and pumped by entire economy into espionage for over TEN years exclusively into espionage against just him just to be able to look at his cities to see what he did. I do miss the good old pre-BTS spy so much.

However, I noticed that he was getting 3 culture of his courthouses, but didn't know why. Any explanation?

i've seen it before too: i would have lost if i hadn't been keeping an eye on it in the victory conditions screens. i ended up razing thebes because i didn't have the resources to hold the city or for a protracted war.
I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

I've seen the French go for a cultural victory... and yeah, I always keep an eye on the victory conditions to see if somebody is trying to pull a fast one. If somebody is, I would like to plan my strategy for "stopping them" before it's too late

It is nice to see the AI go for a cultural victory.

I learned that lesson the hard way, by actually losing to the an AI cultural victory teh turn before I would have won the space race. Stupid Dutch.

When I first started playing, I noticed an AI going for a cultural win and was amazed and applauded the designers for making it an option. Since then, I've played close attention but never seen it again.

Dutch AI was going for it in a MP game I played last week. I was too far away, so I sent my buddy a message, "William is gonna get a CV in about 15 turns if you don't act." Since this is the same guy who I beat earlier with a CV you think he would've learned to keep an eye on that.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
