I had that happen to me in a recent game, but it was early enough to be archers rather than axemen. Of course, it happened on turn 35 on marathon so the archers were deadly enough. Especially since I also had raging barbs turned on.

and you send out a friendly neighborhood watch unit to help, but they didn't get there in time, and oh, look - no one's home.

I really hate it when you start off with terrible land, and every enemy capital you find has flood plains, strategic resources, commerce specials and tons of food plus production.

... I play an 'unrestricted leaders' game as Hammurabi of the Sumerians intending to go on several early wars with COM/Cover 1 Vultures, and the nearest civ is Tokugawa... of the Romans (with cities on hills!).

Or I play as the Romans intending to have some early war fun and I am isolated on an island.

It used to drive me crazy in CIV 3. What made it worse was that I would get pissed off, go back in time to improve the finish time by a few turns, but the AI would still beat me to it! IE the AI knew when we would finish the wonder and cheated to finish first.

I hate it when I research Bronze Working or Animal Husbandry, and there's no copper or horses anywhere near. (Or if it is near, it's in my closest neighbor's BFC.)

I really hate it when I have an early, resource-dependent UU, and the above happens.

Starting on the coast with no sea resources always irks me. Especially when there's not even any fresh water.
