  • Another nb question

I have a UI question. On the "Technology Advisor" screen you can click on techonologies and the title changes to have a number before and after the title. For instance: "6. Fascism (4)". I have managed to determine that the number preceeding the title is the order in which the tech will be researched and the number following the title is the number of turns to complete the research. What I can not figure out is how to cancel / change a choice once I have clicked on a technology.

btw, I am really getting to hate this game. Nothing else is getting done and I stayed up all last night until the sun came up. I don't how many times I said to myself "this is the last turn".

I do not know about the Tech Advisor screen, but you should be able to click on the tech above the map at any time and change it there.

its the tech bar in standard window, its right between the gold/beakers/culture sliders to the left and the date to the right, right in between those two, click on the tech bar and make your choice.

The first number is there if you need to research prerequisites. The 6 means that there are five prereqs to go. The 4 is how many turns it takes to research.

Unless I reversed those, which is possible.
        John Brown did nothing wrong.

Its actually pretty straight forward once you figure it out. All you basically can do is right click and left click.

Left click is for choosing a Tech - if its not available yet, it also chooses those you need to research first. If you hold down Shift you can customize your research path in any way you want. But if you click the wrong one by mistake (or just missed a prerequisite) you'll have to start all over again. You do this by left clicking (w/o Shift) on a Tech, anyone you'd like to research next, and start all over.

So, left click for reselect, and another left click for reselect. (I don't think that you can't deselect once you've selected, only reselect.)

Right click is for accessing the Civilopedia (you do know about the Civilopedia, don't you?). When you exit the pedia your Tech selection(s) will still be there, so its practical for looking up the specifics before you add a Tech on your queue.

          Yeah, join the club!

I've been up all nights for more than a week now, but I've been mostly modding the game. Since I'm learning Python as I go, I've learned that programming is even more addicting than Civ! Well, at least as long as you're adding stuff to Civ.

I used to be a huge fan of tech-research-queuing, but not anymore. I think its a pretty good idea to have a plan for your path, but as circumstances change you may forget to adapt your research accordingly. Also, there is very little point in clicking on 'future tech' at 4,000BC and letting the research progress that way.

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate the help.

Baldyr, your explanation was superb and really cleared up my confusion.

Norselord, I can understand your view point, but for me a novice player the tech advisor fills the role of a road map for unfamiliar territory. Even tho I am using the advisor to determine how to get from where I am to where I want to be I still usually only select the next tech to research and not a tech with 4 or 5 prereqs. I am playing at the warlord level (in other words easy) and have played about 20 games in the last week to a week and half since getting the game. The only one of those games I have had a chance to win is my current in which I have really spent a great deal of time deciding what to research, build, move, attack etc... Of course I still have 100 more turns, so I may yet lose. But my position seems hopeful.

Now that's actually a useful idea! That's just what a complete beginner could need for his first few games - complete research automation!

Instead of Future tech, just click steel.

Well, sure. What about a two click queue where Steel is clicked first and Future Tech second? Would that populate the entire Tech tree or would some be skipped?

What would otherwise be the fastest/easiest way to queue all Techs on the Tech tree?

Not all techs are required for Future Tech... so yes, some techs would be skipped.

Yeah, I'd assume all the dead end religious techs would be skipped.

If conditions change then simply set a new goal. It's easy and can be done in two steps.

Probably though sometimes, especially if you start on a small island, it's good to go after one of the over looked dead end religions just to get the extra happiness and money from a religion.

Yeah... plus some of the later techs as well. Fusion and a few others aren't required for Future Tech.
